The impact of the Russo-Ukrainian conflict on military expenditures of European states: security alliances or geography?

Summary: The Russo-Ukrainian conflict had a significant impact on the military expenditures of European states. This impact cannot be explained by factors such as freeriding within NATO, relative power of individual states, within-state variables, or EU membership. Instead, the distance from Russia played a key role in driving these changes, with road distance being a better measure than fly distance. These findings highlight the continued importance of distance as a geopolitical factor in the 21st century.

Militarism and the Politics of Covid-19 Response in Uganda

Summary: In the context of the global response to Covid-19, Uganda witnessed a disproportionately large involvement of the military, encompassing enforcement of law and order, lockdown measures, managing food relief and medical operations, as well as political repression. The article investigates the reasons behind this excessive militarization, examining the hypothesis that it is determined by pre-existing militarism. The findings indicate a direct connection between pre-crisis militarism and Covid-19 responses, contradicting the belief that the exceptional and novel nature of the pandemic led to overly militarized actions. With the framing of the pandemic and institutional changes, pre-pandemic militarism highlighted the role of the military, as Covid-19 provided an opportunity for Uganda's ruling elites to enhance militaristic rule, exert control over the political sphere during elections, and extend military presence in civilian public health domains. This excessive militarization has significant implications for civil-military relations, specifically in terms of command and control, reporting and accountability, and resource management.

The Long-Term Effect of Military Conscription on Personality and Beliefs

Summary: This study estimates the causal impact of military conscription on long-term beliefs and personality traits. By exploiting the conscription lottery in Argentina and combining administrative data with a survey on beliefs and personality traits, it is found that men who were conscripted are more likely to adopt a military mind-set, and this effect lasts for a long time. Given the significant number of people who go through military conscription, these findings are important for understanding the formation of personality traits and beliefs in a large portion of the world's population.
