Functional types of suburban settlements around two differently sized Czech cities

Jan Kubes et al.

Summary: The suburban landscape around Czech cities has a smaller diversity of functions compared to North American cities. However, in recent years, there has been a growth in suburban settlements with service, commercial, working, and leisure-time functions. The paper focuses on the functional differentiation of suburban settlements around Prague and Ceske Budejovice. While both areas have predominantly residential suburbs, the transect south of Prague has seen the emergence of small suburban towns with services for surrounding settlements and commercial suburbanization. In contrast, suburban settlements in the hinterland of Ceske Budejovice have a smaller functional diversity, but are provided with services and job opportunities by the regional capital city.

Measuring the morphology of suburban settlements: Scale-dependent ambiguities of residential density development in the Prague Urban Region

Jiri-Jakub Zevl et al.

Summary: This article examines the academic debate on methodological approaches to measuring urban sprawl, focusing on the density of residential settlement. Through an empirical study in the hinterland of Prague, the paper contributes to the discussion of suburbanization in Central and Eastern European countries, emphasizing the crucial role of scale in understanding suburban forms. The methodology of point pattern analysis and its benefits in researching the morphology of residential development are highlighted.
