Early Strokes Are Associated with More Global Cognitive Deficits in Adults with Sickle Cell Disease

Maryline Couette et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between neurocognitive profiles and clinical characteristics in sickle cell disease (SCD) patients. A cohort study was conducted in adults with SCD who received comprehensive neuropsychological assessments. Cluster analysis based on neuropsychological testing scores was performed and the association with clinical profiles was examined. The results suggest that SCD patients with childhood stroke may be at higher risk of experiencing a global cognitive deficit profile. Therefore, early neurorehabilitation should be prioritized to reduce the long-term cognitive morbidity of SCD, in addition to existing stroke prevention methods.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between aging and cognitive impairment in sickle cell disease (SCD) and finds that adults with SCD perform worse than controls in various cognitive tests. Moreover, the study reveals a decline in visuospatial abilities, processing speed, and executive functioning among the SCD group. Education may have a protective effect on cognitive decline.

Screening for Cognitive Dysfunction Using the Rowland Universal Dementia Assessment Scale in Adults With Sickle Cell Disease

Stephanie Forte et al.

Summary: Adult patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) show high prevalence of suspected dementia using the RUDAS tool, and this dementia is associated with worsening kidney function and age. Cognitive function should be screened in all adult SCD patients, regardless of age, disease severity, and SCD genotype; further validation of the RUDAS tool is ongoing.
