Advancing Nitinol Implant Design and Simulation Through Data-Driven Methodologies

Harshad M. Paranjape

Summary: Recent advances in data science methods for acquiring and analyzing large amounts of material deformation data have the potential to greatly benefit the design and simulation of Nitinol implants. This review explores various data-driven methodologies and proposes their adaptation to Nitinol design and simulation. The review is organized into three tiers, covering methods for data acquisition, combining data from multiple sources, and data-driven simulation of Nitinol deformation. Widespread adoption of these methods by the Nitinol cardiovascular implant community can be facilitated through consensus building and open exchange of computational tools.

Synchrotron Radiation X-ray Diffraction Measurements of the Thermal Response of a Processing-Induced NiTi Strain Glass Alloy

Bailey Ashmore et al.

Summary: Shape memory alloys (SMAs) have unique shape memory abilities and show great potential in various applications. Strain glass alloys (SGAs), derived from SMAs, undergo a strain glass transition instead of a martensitic transformation, resulting in a distorted crystalline matrix with nano domains of glassy martensite. A study comparing the transformation behavior of a martensitic NiTi SMA with a processing-induced NiTi SGA using wide-angle synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction (WAXS) revealed three observations about SGAs: retention of distorted austenite at high and low temperatures, broadening of diffraction peaks in WAXS, and gradual increase in the amount of the martensitic phase.

Third element diffusion induced amorphization of NiTi in a NiTi-Nb nanocomposite

Sam Bakhtiari et al.

Summary: The paper presents a unique phenomenon observed in a NiTi-Nb nanowire in-situ composite system, where the B2 NiTi matrix undergoes amorphization due to the diffusion of Nb through the B2 lattice. The diffusion of Nb in the NiTi matrix is driven by Oswald ripening, which occurs during the fragmentation and granulation of Nb nanowires at elevated temperatures. The amorphization of the NiTi matrix is attributed to the formation of anti-site defects caused by the substitutional diffusion of Nb.

Deformation induced martensite stabilization of NiTi in constrained composite systems

Sam Bakhtiari et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of tensile deformation on the transformation behaviour of NiTi within the constrained environment of NiTi-Nb composites. The presence of a second phase within the NiTi matrix hinders the lattice distortion martensitic transformation, and after deformation, the NiTi-Nb microparticle composite exhibited the highest stabilisation effect.

Role of point defects in stress-induced martensite transformations in NiTi shape memory alloys: A molecular dynamics study

Chao Yang et al.

Summary: The effect of vacancies, interstitials, and antisite defects on stress-induced phase transformation in equiatomic NiTi alloy was investigated using molecular dynamics simulation. The results show that all defects suppress the transformation, with vacancy clusters having the greatest suppressive effect and antisite defects having the least. The responsible mechanisms are grain boundary pinning and chemical disordering.

Strain glass state in Ni-rich Ni-Ti-Zr shape memory alloys

S. Xu et al.

Summary: This study reports the existence of a strain glass state induced by the precursor stages of H-phase precipitation in Ni-Ti-Zr shape memory alloys, with superelastic effect observed in compression. The material exhibits recoverable strain levels over 4% with little temperature dependence of the stress-strain curves.

Enhanced superelasticity of nanocrystalline NiTi/NiTiNbFe laminar composite

Xiaowei Hu et al.

Summary: This study explores a new concept of the synergy between two constituent shape memory alloys (SMAs) in a composite to achieve a wide superelastic temperature window. The nanocrystalline NiTi/NiTiNbFe dual-SMA composite is able to achieve an ultra-wide superelastic temperature window of 336 degrees C, with superior properties compared to all NiTi-based shape memory alloys to date.

Nanocrystalline strain glass TiNiPt and its superelastic behavior

Daqiang Jiang et al.

Summary: This paper reports on the strain glass transition observed in a nanocrystalline Ti50Ni35Pt15 alloy, achieved through a combination of doping of Pt atoms in the matrix and high-density grain boundaries. The alloy exhibited significant superelasticity and a low Young's modulus over a wide temperature range. The findings provide insight for the development of nanocrystalline strain glass shape-memory alloys.
