Topography and mechanical measurements of primary Schwann cells and neuronal cells with atomic force microscope for understanding and controlling nerve growth

Nusrat Sajid

Summary: The study used an atomic force microscope (AFM) to examine the topography and mechanical properties of primary Schwann cells and neuronal cells. The findings revealed significant differences in elastic moduli between primary Schwann cells and neuronal cells, as well as higher elastic moduli in growth cones compared to neuronal cells and primary Schwann cells. These results have important implications for understanding the peripheral nerve system (PNS) and optimizing surface patterns and nerve guidance conduits.

Nanoscale insight into biochemical changes in cervical cancer cells exposed to adaptogenic drug

Ewa Pieta

Summary: This paper introduces the use of atomic force microscopy-based infrared spectroscopy (AFM-IR) to evaluate cellular response to adaptogens in a cervical cancer in vitro model. AFM-IR was employed to observe single cells and track nanoscale biochemical changes after adaptogen treatment. The results indicate that with the increase in adaptogen concentration, significant changes occur in the cell nucleus and actin cytoskeleton. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that withaferin A has great potential for inhibiting cervical cancer cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner.

Cellular biomechanics: Fluid-structure interaction or structural simulation?

L. Papadakis et al.

Summary: This article discusses how cells respond to their mechanical environment and the application of numerical modeling in studying cellular mechanotransduction. The study finds that the consideration of continuum mechanics is a limitation in current models, and that fluid-structure interaction analysis provides a more realistic framework for understanding cellular biomechanics. The results show that FSI analysis stimulates the cell nucleus more effectively and captures more realistic intracellular loading patterns compared to FE modeling.

Curcumin induces mitochondrial apoptosis in human hepatoma cells through BCLAF1-mediated modulation of PI3K/AKT/GSK-3? signaling

Chunhua Bai et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that curcumin triggers mitochondrial apoptosis in HCC by inhibiting the PI3K/AKT/GSK-3 beta signaling pathway and downregulating BCLAF1 expression, thereby inhibiting tumor growth. This highlights a potential therapeutic strategy leveraging the antitumor effects of curcumin against HCC.

Single-cell/nanoparticle trajectories reveal two-tier Levy-like interactions across bacterial swarms

Yuqian Sang et al.

Summary: Researchers studied the collective interactions of bacteria by tracking individual cells and gold nanoparticles in a bacterial colony. They found that the behavior of the bacterial community can be described using a Levy-walk-like superdiffusion model. The researchers proposed the presence of a decentralized two-tier active-mixing network for efficient information exchange in the bacterial community.

Advanced techniques for gene heterogeneity research: Single-cell sequencing and on-chip gene analysis systems

Zaizai Dong et al.

Summary: Gene heterogeneity has a significant impact on cellular behaviors and poses challenges to biomedicine. Traditional gene analysis methods obscure the gene properties of individual cells, while single-cell gene analysis techniques offer unprecedented opportunities for high precision and high throughput research on gene heterogeneity. This review summarizes the latest techniques in single-cell sequencing and on-chip gene analysis, highlighting their principles and application scenarios in gene heterogeneity research. The future challenges and directions for technical improvement and clinical applications of single-cell gene analysis techniques are also discussed.

Alterations in mitochondrial morphology as a key driver of immunity and host defence

Mariana P. Cervantes-Silva et al.

Summary: Mitochondrial dynamics play a crucial role in immune cell function, allowing for rapid changes in cellular metabolism and activation. Pathogens have evolved mechanisms to manipulate host cell mitochondrial remodeling to promote their own survival. Understanding and manipulating mitochondrial dynamics is essential for maintaining host immunity.

A finite element model of an osteoblast to quantify the transduction of exogenous forces to cellular components

Labros Papadakis et al.

Summary: This study introduced a 3D finite element model of an osteoblast and verified its accuracy through experiments. Results showed that mitochondria experienced higher stress compared to the cell nucleus, and the elasticity of the cell varied with different loading scenarios.
