A case of severe paraquat poisoning treated by continuous hemodiafiltration without sequelae

Masaki Hisamura et al.

Summary: A 49-year-old male attempted suicide by ingesting pesticides and presented at the hospital with restlessness and vomiting blue liquid. He was diagnosed with paraquat poisoning at a lethal dose and experienced renal dysfunction. Continuous hemodiafiltration (CHDF) and temporary hemodialysis were initiated and resulted in improved renal function. The patient was discharged in good condition after 36 days and remains well with mild renal impairment and no pulmonary fibrosis 240 days after the incident. Early initiation of CHDF is crucial in treating paraquat poisoning.
