A systematic review of household energy transition in low and middle income countries

Dawit Guta et al.

Summary: This paper reviews 92 studies to systematically analyze the factors affecting household adoption and disadoption of clean fuels and improved biomass stoves, as well as the decision-making process for solid fuel use and suspension. The studies are categorized into seven broad domains, providing a detailed account of the factors influencing household energy transitions. With a conceptual framework developed based on the review results, attention is drawn to both the adoption and use of new fuels and the reduction in solid fuel use in household energy decisions.

Variability in the household use of cooking fuels: The importance of dishes cooked, non-cooking end uses, and seasonality in understanding fuel stacking in rural and urban slum communities in six north Indian states

Carlos F. Gould et al.

Summary: The study reveals the practice of fuel stacking, where households in India use both clean and polluting fuels together. The survey data shows that half of rural and one-third of urban slum households engage in fuel stacking. The study also highlights the variations in the intensity of secondary fuel use among households in the same stacking category.

Factors Influencing the Extent of the Commercialization of Indigenous Crops Among Smallholder Farmers in the Limpopo and Mpumalanga Provinces of South Africa

Nonkululeko Thandeka Brightness Zondi et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the market participation of smallholder farmers in South Africa, focusing on the factors that influence their participation in the indigenous crops market. The study reveals that gender, off-farm income, access to market information, and HIV infection among family members significantly affect farmers' decision to participate in the market. Household size and market access also have statistical significance in determining the extent of market participation. Recommendations include providing training for farmers and extension workers, promoting government and research institution support for indigenous crops, and raising consumer awareness of the income and nutritional benefits of indigenous crops.
