Deep shale gas in the Ordovician-Silurian Wufeng-Longmaxi formations of the Sichuan Basin, SW China: Insights from reservoir characteristics, preservation conditions and development strategies

Haikuan Nie et al.

Summary: Deep shale gas at a burial depth greater than 3500 m in China is an important potential target for exploration and development. This study systematically investigates the spatial distribution, reservoir types and properties, preservation conditions, and gas content of deep shale gas in the Sichuan Basin. It is recommended to establish a volume fracturing plan and optimize production systems with excellent pressure management procedures to maximize deep shale gas production and achieve commercial development.

The mode I fracture toughness alternation and crack propagation behavior evolution due to long-term Sc-CO2 saturation

Zijie Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of supercritical carbon dioxide (Sc-CO2) on the fracture behavior of shale. The results show that after Sc-CO2 saturation, the fracture toughness, elastic modulus, and absorbed energy of shale decrease. High-speed camera images and scanning electron microscopy reveal changes in fracture mechanisms and surface roughness of shale after saturation. The generation of pore and cracks is identified as the main reason for the decrease in shale resistance to fracture. Additionally, saturated shale specimens require less energy to initiate and propagate cracks, with a main fracture mode of transgranular cracks.

Changes in microstructure and mechanical properties of shales exposed to supercritical CO2 and brine

Dawei Zhou et al.

Summary: The study investigates the changes in microstructure and mechanical properties of shale exposed to supercritical CO2, showing that the mechanical properties of shale are significantly altered by microstructural variations induced by strong interactions between CO2-rich fluid and rock minerals.

Experimental study of the influence of temperature and cooling method on dynamic mechanical properties and damage of granite

Yan Xi et al.

Summary: This study conducted a dynamic damage analysis of high-temperature rocks subjected to different thermal shocks. The results showed that increasing treatment temperature leads to a decrease in dynamic peak stress and elastic modulus, as well as an increase in peak strain. These findings have important theoretical implications for the development and utilization of geothermal resources and underground engineering applications.

Effect of real-time high temperature and loading rate on mode I fracture toughness of granite

Ke Yang et al.

Summary: A comprehensive understanding of the impact of real-time high temperature and loading rate on the fracture toughness of rocks is crucial for comprehending the fracture mechanism in Hot Dry Rock (HDR). This study found that temperature has a notable effect on the development of intergranular and transgranular cracks, with fracture toughness and peak load decreasing as temperature increases. Furthermore, the influence of loading rate on fracture toughness varies at different temperatures. The findings of this study could serve as a significant foundation for assessing the safety and stability of geothermal engineering.

Effect of supercritical CO2 treatment on physical properties and functional groups of shales

Ahmed Fatah et al.

Summary: The treatment of shales with supercritical CO2 can alter mineral composition, with an increase in quartz content and decrease in clay and carbonate minerals, providing benefits for long-term CO2 storage. Shales rich in clay are more susceptible to SCCO2 treatment, and the increase in oxygen-containing groups indicates a high adsorption capacity for CO2. The behavior of functional groups post-SCCO2 treatment varies depending on clay content, and quartz-rich shales may be more favorable for CO2 adsorption and storage capacity.

Fracture toughness interpretation from breakdown pressure

Yue Gao et al.

Summary: Experimental evidence shows that the measured toughness increases with confining stress. However, interpreting the observed breakdown pressure relies on assuming uniform fluid pressure in the cracks and identifying the peak pressure with fracture initiation pressure. The model challenges these assumptions by considering fluid lag and hydraulic compliance, indicating that the actual toughness may be overestimated when the breakdown pressure is used to interpret it.

Micromechanisms of coal fracture: Insights from quantitative AE technique

Xiaoran Wang et al.

Summary: The experimental study on microcracks in hard coal beams using AE technique revealed various mechanisms of microcracks, with localized shear and tensile displacements and predominantly mode-I opening microcracks in the global coordinate system. The orientation of microcrack planes was found to be mostly vertical, with a majority of AE sources having angle less than 30 degrees with the horizontal direction. The study also showed energy dissipation mainly above the crack tip during coal fracture, with AE magnitudes following the Gutenberg-Richter relation.
