Optimisation and performance evaluation of response surface methodology (RSM), artificial neural network (ANN) and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) in the prediction of biogas production from palm oil mill effluent (POME)

Daniel Jia Sheng Chong et al.

Summary: This study utilizes machine learning algorithms such as RSM, ANFIS, and ANN to model biogas production and methane yield in a local anaerobic covered lagoon. The models show high accuracy with R² up to 0.98. ANFIS has the highest prediction accuracy with the lowest MAE and RMSE values. Optimal conditions obtained through multi-objective optimization show increased biogas production and methane yield. pH is identified as the most influential factor on methane yield through sensitivity analysis.

Ahmed M. Elgarahy et al.

Summary: Food waste contains various nutrients that can be reused to produce value-added products or converted into green energy sources, such as biogas, biohydrogen, and biodiesel, as an alternative to nonrenewable fuels. Laboratory studies have shown that biochemical production using food waste is as effective as using pure carbon sources. This review article aims to provide a global perspective on the approaches used to turn food waste into usable products and green energy sources. It discusses the sources, types, impacts, characteristics, pre-treatment strategies, and potential management of food waste for value-added product generation. The reviewed articles also highlight the feasibility of energy recovery from food waste through various transformation processes, as well as the socioeconomic, environmental, and engineering aspects related to food waste management.

Optimisation of biogas yield from anaerobic co-digestion of dual waste for environmental sustainability: ANN, RSM and GA approach

Aqueel Ahmad et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to optimize the conversion of food waste and animal manure into biogas using an L-25 orthogonal array and response surface method (RSM) and genetic algorithm (GA). Experiments were conducted to collect data on the variation of mixing ratios, retention times, and digester temperatures. An artificial neural network (ANN) model was developed to estimate biogas production yield. The optimal parameters were found to be a 0:100 (w/w%) mixing ratio, 15-day retention time, and 40℃ digester temperature, with corresponding biogas yields of 551.774 ml/day and 551.776 ml/day.

Effect of mixed primary and secondary sludge for two-stage anaerobic digestion (AD)

Cheng Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated two-stage anaerobic digestion of mixed sludge with different volume ratios, finding that the highest H-2 and CH4 yields were obtained in a volume ratio of 1:3 for primary and secondary sludge. Mixed sludge was found to have a positive effect on the release of organics and utilization of volatile fatty acids in anaerobic digestion. Investigating the compositional characteristics of dissolved organic matters revealed more degradable substances utilization in the mixture of sludge.

Understanding of the interrelationship between methane production and microorganisms in high-solid anaerobic co-digestion using microbial analysis and machine learning

Zhanjiang Pei et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interaction between species and microbial metabolism in high-solid anaerobic digestion using machine learning and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The results showed that extreme learning machine could accurately predict the biogas production and butyric acid, acetic acid, and pH had significant effects on the production. The addition of manure containing ammonia nitrogen improved the metabolism and diversity of microorganisms, enhancing the anaerobic digestion efficiency. Furthermore, the co-occurrence network revealed the differentiation of niches within the system to reduce the impact of ammonia nitrogen. Overall, microbial analysis and machine learning can provide insights into the dynamic processes of methanogenic microorganisms and improve the efficiency of anaerobic digestion.

Chijioke Elijah Onu et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to model and optimize the substrate treatment process in biogas energy production from yam peel substrates via anaerobic digestion. The results indicated that temperature had the most significant effect on the substrate pretreatment, and thermo-chemical modification of the substrate resulted in structural changes and solubilization of molecules. ANFIS, ANN, and RSM models showed good agreement between experimental and predicted biogas yield, with ANFIS being marginally better than ANN. Optimizing the ANFIS model resulted in the highest biogas volume.
