Crack morphology tailoring and permeability prediction of polyvinyl alcohol -steel hybrid fiber engineered cementitious composites

Zhenbo Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the crack morphology of hybrid fiber ECC (HyECC) containing polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers and steel fibers was characterized using digital image processing (DIP) method. It was found that the addition of steel fibers optimized the crack morphology, resulting in smaller average crack width and increased longitudinal distribution of cracks. Moreover, a permeability model derived from the crack morphology and the modified Hagen-Poiseuille law accurately predicted the permeability of cracked HyECC.

Effects of cracks on chloride-induced corrosion initiation and propagation of carbon and stainless steel rebar

Nicoletta Russo et al.

Summary: Current durability design models for reinforced concrete structures in chloride-contaminated environments do not consider the effects of cracks. Literature reports controversial results on corrosion propagation time of carbon steel (CS) in cracked concrete, while fewer information can be found on stainless steel (SS) rebar. This study presents an experimental investigation on corrosion initiation and propagation of CS and SS rebar in uncracked and cracked concrete.

Effects of cracks on chloride-induced corrosion initiation and propagation of carbon and stainless steel rebar

Nicoletta Russo et al.

Summary: Current durability design models for reinforced concrete structures in chloride-contaminated environments do not consider the effects of cracks. Experimental results demonstrated that micro-cracks contribute to the acceleration of corrosion phenomena for carbon steel (CS), while stainless steel (SS) rebar remains in passive conditions even in cracked concrete.

Effect of pre-existing longitudinal and transverse corrosion cracks on the flexural behaviour of corroded RC beams

Hussein Nasser et al.

Summary: The study revealed that transverse cracks cause localized section loss, leading to nonlinearity in the relation between longitudinal crack widths and section loss. Additionally, it was found that longitudinal corrosion cracks reduce the number of flexural cracks, while transverse cracks create weak points that trigger beam failure. Furthermore, transverse corrosion cracks may lead to misaligned minimum cross-sections on the tensile rebars, affecting the failure mechanism.

An experimental study on the steel corrosion behavior in NaCl-immersed concrete under hydraulic pressure

Jae -Chan Park et al.

Summary: Steel corrosion in concrete immersed in NaCl under hydraulic pressure was studied. It was found that rebars corroded significantly in this environment, especially under high hydraulic pressure. However, the corrosion rate decreased drastically after reaching its maximum value.

Combined impact of carbonation and crack width on the Chloride Penetration and Corrosion Resistance of Concrete Structures

Abbas S. AL-Ameeri et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of concrete carbonation on chloride penetration resistance and corrosion rate in RC structures with service-related cracks. Results demonstrate that carbonation significantly increases chloride penetration depth, chloride concentration profile, and corrosion potential when exposed to chloride environment, compared to uncarbonated concrete samples.

Self-healing of PE-fiber reinforced lightweight high-strength engineered cementitious composite

Kequan Yu et al.

Summary: By synergistically utilizing crumb rubber and hollow fly ash cenosphere particles, a lightweight high-strength engineered cementitious composite with enhanced self-healing capability was successfully developed, reducing crack width to 50 μm. Despite lower compressive and tensile strengths with the addition of these particles, the tensile strength to self-weight ratio of the composite is twice that of M45 PVA-ECC.

Corrosion of steel rebar embedded in UHPC beams with cracked matrix

Liang Fan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that cracks in UHPC beams can affect the corrosion of steel rebar, but the corrosion rate decreases over time. Higher steel fiber content can reduce the corrosion rate without introducing galvanic corrosion on steel rebar. Additionally, the efficiency of autogenous self-healing in UHPC is found to be low.

The long-term failure mechanisms of alkali-activated slag mortar exposed to wet-dry cycles of sodium sulphate

Qing Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the long-term performance of alkali-activated slag mortar exposed to wet-dry cycles and sodium sulphate solutions. Results showed that AAS mortars performed better than Portland cement and high sulphate resistant samples. The main failure mode for AAS mortar was external spalling due to the crystallisation/dissolving pressure of sodium sulphate. Moreover, unreacted slag exposed during sodium sulphate attack can continue to react to form silicon-rich gels, improving flexural strength.

Self-healing of early-age cracks in cement mortars with artificial functional aggregates

Mian Luo et al.

Summary: This study developed artificial functional aggregates with fly ash, silica fume, metakaolin, limestone powder, and sodium carbonate powder to promote the self-healing efficiency of concrete. Experimental results showed that the artificial functional aggregates effectively improved the self-healing capacity of mortar specimens, leading to increased closure ratio of surface crack and better regain of water tightness. The major healing product in the crack was calcite precipitation, with more calcium carbonate precipitations observed in mortars with artificial functional aggregates compared to the control mortar.

Influence of bending cracks on the distribution of rebar corrosion in SHCC

Koichi Kobayashi et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that SHCC has better resistance against chloride penetration and rebar corrosion compared to traditional concrete under the same conditions. Rebar corrosion in SHCC mainly occurs around cracks, and LLC is more likely to cause corrosion than DLC in beams with the same amount of deformation.
