Centrifuge model tests on liquefaction mitigation effect of soil-cement grids under large earthquake loadings

Yuan Cao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the seismic response and liquefaction mitigation effect of soil-cement grid improved ground subjected to large earthquake loadings through dynamic centrifuge tests. The results show that the soil-cement grid effectively mitigates soil liquefaction and post-shaking settlements, even under very strong shakings. The interaction between the soil and the cement grid plays a significant role in reducing dynamic shear strain and enhancing the overall performance of the improved ground.

Influences of spatial variability of hydrothermal properties on the freezing process in artificial ground freezing technique

Kai-Qi Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the influences of spatial variability of hydrothermal properties on artificial ground freezing (AGF) were investigated using the stochastic finite element method and Monte Carlo simulation. The closure time was used as an indicator to evaluate the impact of uncertainty in hydrothermal properties on AGF efficiency. Results showed that the spatial variability of hydrothermal properties significantly affected the estimation of closure time.

Unified Modeling of Interface between Structured Clay or Crushable Sand and Structure

Jie Yang et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study is to develop a unified elastoplastic model that can describe the monotonic and cyclic behaviors of natural structured clay-structure and crushable sand-structure interfaces. The model is based on bounding surface plasticity and the critical state concept, and incorporates features such as a more general yield surface, degradation of bounding surface size, and grain breakage effect. Simulation schemes are established for interface shear tests under different conditions, and comparisons between experimental and numerical results validate the capability of the model to predict the behavior of these interfaces.

Micro-mechanical analysis of soil-structure interface behavior under constant normal stiffness condition with DEM

Pei Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the frictional characteristics and displacement localization of soil-structure interface (SSI) under constant normal stiffness condition by simulating a series of interface shear tests. Both macroscopic and microscopic behaviors and properties are analyzed, revealing the influence of normal stiffness at both scales.

Coupled thermal-hydraulic modeling of artificial ground freezing with uncertainties in pipe inclination and thermal conductivity

Yong Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a unit cell model of freeze pipes was established to examine the effects of uncertainties such as groundwater seepage, freeze pipe inclination, and spatial variability in thermal conductivity on the AGF system. Results show that considering these uncertainties can help evaluate the additional freezing time required and provide reasonable freeze pipe spacing and critical seepage velocity.

Effect of particle breakage on the behavior of soil-structure interface under constant normal stiffness condition with DEM

Pei Wang et al.

Summary: This study used the discrete element method to simulate a series of interface shear tests with constant normal stiffness to investigate the impact of particle breakage on the behavior of the soil-structure interface. The results showed that particle breakage decreases dilation, normal stress, shear stress, and shear zone thickness in the interface shear test, decreases the peak friction angle while increases the residual friction angle at the interface, and decreases soil anisotropy at the interface. Additionally, the degree of particle breakage is increased by normal stiffness.

SPT-based probabilistic evaluation of soil liquefaction potential considering design life of civil infrastructures

Zheng Guan et al.

Summary: This study proposes a fully probabilistic framework for delineating the spatial distribution of soil liquefaction potential in a vertical cross-section, and quantifying the liquefaction probability. The sensitivity study shows that the liquefaction probability of the cross-section increases with the target design life of the structure.
