Effect of bubble size and column depth on diffused aerator efficiency

Nicholas Palya et al.

Summary: Aeration is a major consumer of energy in wastewater treatment and other industries, and optimizing oxygen transfer for energy efficiency is crucial for sustainability. This study uses a discrete bubble model to estimate oxygen transfer in water columns with bubble diffusers and explores the relationship between mass transfer coefficient and bubble size. The results show that modifying bubble size can maximize aeration efficiency under certain conditions, while increasing water column depth can also optimize energy efficiency. This study challenges the misconception that smaller bubbles and deeper columns are always the best choice for aeration efficiency.

Yi Han et al.

Summary: An air-lifting internal circulating reactor with a high circulation ratio was used to treat municipal wastewater, achieving efficient nitrogen removal. The reactor demonstrated a high capacity for organic degradation and achieved low concentrations of chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, and ammonium nitrogen in the effluent. Traditional nitrification and denitrification, simultaneous nitrification and denitrification, and nitrogen assimilation were identified as the main nitrogen removal pathways.

Tingxi Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the abundance and community composition of the phoD gene were investigated in sediments from different regions of Lake Taihu during cyanobacterial blooms. The results showed spatial and temporal heterogeneity in phoD abundance, which was positively correlated with total organic carbon and total nitrogen. The phoD-harboring bacteria were mainly identified as belonging to Actinobacteria, with Kribbella, Streptomyces, and Lentzea as the predominant genera. The study provides important insights into the diversity and factors influencing the phoD gene in shallow lake sediments.

Fouling control in a submerged membrane reactor: Aeration vs membrane oscillations

Siddharth Gupta et al.

Summary: The potential of membrane fouling in a submerged membrane reactor due to particle deposition was investigated using aeration and membrane oscillations. Experimental and simulation results showed that membrane oscillation was a more effective fouling mitigation strategy compared to aeration, with higher shear rates. Photocatalytic degradation was used to characterize the system performance, and the results confirmed the superiority of membrane oscillation.

Multi-metabolism regulation insights into nutrients removal performance with adding heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification bacteria in tidal flow constructed wetlands

Xu Tan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that the addition of heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification (HN-AD) bacteria in constructed wetlands significantly improved nutrient removal efficiency. By promoting NO3--N and NH4+-N removal, along with reducing phosphorus release, the HN-AD bacteria enhanced the performance of tidal flow constructed wetlands (TFCWs) in decentralized domestic sewage treatment. The study also highlighted the importance of metabolic pathways and microbial consortia in regulating multi-metabolism processes to enhance nutrient metabolism in TFCWs.
