How professionals deal with clients' explicit objections to their advice

Steven Bloch et al.

Summary: Previous literature on advice-resistance in medicine and welfare has primarily focused on patients' or callers' inexplicit resistance, but clients also raise explicit objections. This study found that objections can be categorized into the client's own world or the practitioner's world. Practitioners can employ different strategies to handle objections and showcase their expertise.

Going shopping or consulting in medical visits: Caregivers' roles in pediatric antibiotic prescribing in China

Nan Christine Wang et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is a global public health crisis, with over-prescription of antibiotics in China due to patients and caregivers challenging physician authority. The lack of medical authority contributes to physicians prescribing antibiotics against their professional judgment. Educational campaigns are necessary to promote rational antibiotic use and protect physicians' professional authority.

Arriving at no: Patient pressure to prescribe antibiotics and physicians' responses

Tanya Stivers et al.

Summary: The study found that while few patients directly request antibiotics, many subtly pressure physicians through priming, nudging, and resisting, influencing clinical prescribing behavior. In addition to managing patient expectations and using persuasion, physicians can counter patient pressure by their communication style and timing.

When patients and clinician (dis)agree about the nature of the problem: The role of displays of shared understanding in acceptance of treatment

Rose McCabe

Summary: This study used conversation analysis to explore the shared understanding of mental health problems between doctors and patients, as well as patient acceptance of treatment. It found that recommending treatment for the patient's initial focal concern and reflecting the patient's own words in the treatment recommendation can increase the likelihood of patient acceptance of treatment.
