Comparison of MBR and MBBR followed by UV or electrochemical disinfection for decentralized greywater treatment

Seppe Ongena et al.

Summary: Greywater is a viable source for water reuse at the household or building level, and two treatment approaches, MBR and MBBR, were compared in this study. The results showed that both MBR and MBBR met most water quality requirements for greywater reuse, but MBR had a smaller reactor volume and delayed membrane fouling compared to MBBR. However, neither system allowed adequate nitrogen removal, and MBBR had issues with effluent chemical oxygen demand and turbidity requirements. UV disinfection was more efficient than electrochemical disinfection in the long run. Proposed improvements aim to optimize the performance of both treatment trains and disinfection processes for small-scale greywater treatment for reuse.

Photo-disinfection processes for bacterial inactivation and underlying principles for water constituents' impact: A review

Jemi Gandhi et al.

Summary: Photo-disinfection processes, including solar disinfection (SODIS), ultraviolet (UV) light disinfection, and light promoted advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), have been extensively studied for bacterial inactivation. Water constituents such as turbidity, pH, dissolved organic matter (DOM), inorganic ions, salinity, temperature, and dissolved oxygen (DO) were found to have positive, negative, or neutral impacts on these photo-disinfection processes, and controlling the constituents in feed water is crucial for effective disinfection.

Oral zero-valent-molybdenum nanodots for inflammatory bowel disease therapy

Chen Zhang et al.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) affects millions of people each year. The overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) plays a critical role in the progress of IBD and will be a potential therapeutic target. Researchers have synthesized oral zero-valent-molybdenum nanodots (ZVMNs) that can scavenge ROS, offering a promising alternative treatment option for patients suffering from IBD. These ZVMNs can pass through the stomach and be absorbed by the intestine, reducing the quantity of ROS and protecting colon tissues from oxidative stress by inhibiting the nuclear factor.B signaling pathway and reducing the production of excessive pro-inflammatory factors.

Wavelength-dependent time?dose reciprocity and stress mechanism for UV-LED disinfection of Escherichia coli

Dana Pousty et al.

Summary: The efficiency of UV disinfection by low-pressure mercury lamps depends on UV fluence, but the time-dose reciprocity may not always apply. The inactivation of E. coli by UV-LEDs differs at different central wavelengths, with each causing different levels of DNA damage or oxidative stress. UV-LED265 showed higher DNA damage, while UV-LED285 and UV-LED295 caused more oxidative stress.

Photo Augmented Copper-based Fenton Disinfection under Visible LED Light and Natural Sunlight Irradiation

Gokulakrishnan Subramanian et al.

Summary: The visible light/Cu(II)/H2O2 system showed enhanced disinfection compared to the Cu(II)/H2O2 system without the need for reducing agents or organic ligands. Experimental results demonstrated that the visible light/Cu(II)/H2O2 system caused significant damage to bacterial cell membranes and proposed a ligand to metal charge transfer mechanism for enhanced disinfection. Energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the visible light/Cu(II)/H2O2 system were determined to be favorable for practical applications.

Yuhao Lu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the inactivation efficiencies of UV-LEDs with different wavelengths and combinations on common foodborne pathogens and spoilage bacteria, finding that 271 nm UV-LED displayed the highest efficiency on tested bacteria. Additionally, the comparison between continuous and pulsed irradiation on E. coli and S. epidermidis showed comparable inactivation using various UV-LED modules.
