Blocking the reverse reactions of overall water splitting on a Rh/GaN-ZnO photocatalyst modified with Al2O3

Zheng Li et al.

Summary: Sunlight-driven photocatalytic overall water splitting (OWS) is a promising approach for solar-to-chemical energy conversion, but only a few photocatalysts have been successful. In this study, we found that decorating the Rh co-catalyst on GaN-ZnO photocatalyst with Al2O3 by atomic layer deposition can significantly suppress reverse reactions and enhance the photocatalytic OWS activity by more than an order of magnitude, with an increase in apparent quantum efficiency from 0.3% to 7.1% at 420 nm. The partial coverage of Rh surface sites with inert oxides effectively blocks the reduction/oxidation cycle of Rh atoms during the photocatalytic OWS reaction, leading to the suppression of reverse reactions.

First principles study of the effect of (Mg, C) doping and Zn vacancies on the carrier activity, lifetime, visible light effect, and oxidation-reduction reaction of ZnO(001) monolayers

Mude Qi et al.

Summary: Currently, progress has been made in studying the effects of Mg doping on the photocatalytic performance of ZnO monolayers. However, there is a lack of research on the impact of C impurities, Mg doping, and the coexistence of Zn vacancies on the electronic structure and photocatalytic performance of ZnO monolayers. This study investigated the effects of Mg doping and the presence of C impurities and Zn vacancies on the electronic structure and photocatalysis of ZnO monolayers. The results showed that doped systems had negative formation energy and exhibited improved photocatalytic properties.

Summary: In this study, Ag/ZnO photocatalyst was synthesized using a one-pot hydrothermal method in an ethylene glycol medium. The synthesized samples were characterized using various analytical techniques. The results showed that spherical Ag/ZnO exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity due to the formation of the heterojunction interface and the plasmonic resonance effect of silver.

Effects of Sm and VZn in different valence states on the magnetic property, carrier lifetime, electric dipole moment, visible light, and redox reaction of ZnO:Hi under biaxial strain

Airong Yang et al.

Summary: This study uses first principle calculations to investigate the influence of the coexistence of different valence states of Sm and V-Zn on the photocatalytic and magnetic properties of ZnO containing interstitial H under strain. The results demonstrate that the magnetic properties of Zn34Sm3+O36(V-Zn(0/2)-) and Zn34Sm3+HiO36(V-Zn(0/2-)) systems arise from mixed-coupled double exchange of electron orbitals. The Zn34Sm2+O36(V-Zn(0/2-)), Zn34Sm2+/3+HiO36(V-Zn(0)), and Zn(34)Sm(2+)HiO(36)(V-Zn(2-)) systems exhibit independent single-ion magnetic characteristics. Additionally, the Zn34Sm3+HiO36(V-Zn(2-)) system demonstrates excellent photocatalytic performance with a long carrier lifetime, significant red shift of absorption spectrum, and strong redox ability under -2% compressive strain.

Influence of doping with Co, Cu and Ni on the morphological and structural parameters and functional properties of ZnO nanoobjects

Dmitry Tkachenko et al.

Summary: Recently, extensive studies have been conducted on ZnO nanoobjects (nanoparticles, nanosheets, nanorods, nanoflowers, etc.) due to their unique dielectric, optical and photocatalytic properties. These nanoobjects, appearing on a nanoscale, have shown promise in optoelectronics, photocatalytic degradation of cyclic pollutants in wastewater and other applications. This work focuses on the impact of introducing 3d elements into the ZnO lattice, particularly on the formation and properties of the nanoobjects.

Atomic Layer Deposition and Strain Analysis of Epitaxial GaN-ZnO Core-Shell Nanowires

Maximilian Kolhep et al.

Summary: We demonstrate the epitaxial coating of GaN NWs with an epitaxial ZnO shell by atomic layer deposition. Scanning transmission electron microscopy confirms a sharp and defect-free coherent interface. The strain in the core-shell structure was analyzed using 4D-STEM strain mapping and Raman spectroscopy, and compared to theoretical calculations. The results highlight the advantages of epitaxial shell growth using atomic layer deposition, such as conformal coating and precise thickness control.

Electronic and optical properties of two-dimensional GaN/ZnO heterojunction tuned by different stacking configurations

Sihao Xia et al.

Summary: The study investigates the electronic and optical properties of monolayer GaN and ZnO under different stacking configurations through systematic first principle calculations. The results show that carrier mobilities are enhanced after integration, and high absorptivity in the solar-blind region is observed. The research provides valuable insights for the design and synthesis of photodetectors or solar cells based on 2D GaN/ZnO heterojunctions, as well as opens up new research interests in optoelectronic materials and devices with advanced semiconductor materials.

Type-II CdS/PtSSe heterostructures used as highly efficient water-splitting photocatalysts

Guangzhao Wang et al.

Summary: The design of two-dimensional heterostructures is an effective way to modify the properties of 2D materials. In this study, CdS/PtSSe heterostructures were investigated for their photocatalytic activity using first-principles calculations. The results showed that the small lattice mismatches and negative interface formation energies made the CdS/PtSSe heterostructures feasible, with small bandgaps allowing them to efficiently absorb visible light. The stacking configurations had little effect on the electronic structures, but the contact sides could switch between type-I and type-II heterostructures. The type-II CdS/PtSSe heterostructures promoted the separation of photogenerated carriers, while the band edges fulfilled the thermodynamic requirements for photocatalytic water-splitting, achieving solar-to-hydrogen efficiencies of up to 37.5%.

Rare earth metal element doped g-GaN monolayer : Study of structural, electronic, magnetic, and optical properties by first-principle calculations

Sandhya Y. Wakhare et al.

Summary: This study investigates the properties of g-GaN monolayer doped with rare earth (RE) metal elements using first-principle calculations, including structural, magnetic, and optical properties. Doping with different RE elements leads to structural deformation and induced magnetism in g-GaN monolayer. The band gap and conductivity of g-GaN monolayer are modified by RE doping. The absorption spectra and dielectric constants are enhanced with RE doping. This study provides the basis for the development of optoelectronic devices based on g-GaN monolayer.
