Variable Speed Limit Strategy With Dynamic Control Cycle Based on Predictive Control

Ruicheng Lu et al.

Summary: Variable speed limit (VSL) strategies have been proven to be effective in mitigating traffic congestion at freeway bottlenecks. In this paper, a dynamic cycle strategy of VSL based on predictive control is developed, which includes an analysis of applicable situations, a probability model for cycle selection, and the use of a transmission model to predict traffic flow. An optimization algorithm is also designed to optimize the cycle and speed limit options. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed strategies and algorithms can effectively reduce traffic congestion and improve the service level of freeway networks.

Dynamic areas strategy design for variable speed limiting at fixed freeway bottlenecks

Ruicheng Lu et al.

Summary: Variable speed limit (VSL) control is expected to improve traffic mobility and safety on freeways, especially at bottlenecks. However, the effectiveness of VSL is reduced due to unstable input flow when the number of speed limit areas is fixed. In this paper, a dynamic speed limit area strategy is proposed to strengthen the VSL control effect by redefining and dividing the speed limit areas into three types based on the road's transmission capability. The strategy optimizes the speed limit value and the number of speed limit areas using predictive control and has shown to improve freeway safety and efficiency.

Selection of the Speed Command Distance for Improved Performance of a Rule-Based VSL and Lane Change Control

Tianchen Yuan et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effect of the distance between Variable Speed Limit (VSL) signs and accident or bottleneck points in VSL control. A rule-based VSL strategy is proposed, which matches the outflow of the upstream VSL zone with the bottleneck capacity based on a multi-section Cell Transmission Model (CTM). The findings show that the distance plays a significant role in improving traffic flow and reducing bottleneck congestion.

Variable speed limit strategy with anticipatory lane changing decisions

Bidoura Khondaker et al.

Summary: This paper develops a novel anticipatory Variable Speed Limit (VSL) control strategy that incorporates driver behavior based on trajectory data from probe vehicles. The study aims to optimize speed limit controls to reduce lane changing and braking, thus improving traffic throughput, safety, and sustainability. Results show that the VSL strategy can lead to decreased lane changing rate and smoother acceleration and deceleration patterns, resulting in lower emissions and fuel consumption.
