UV-C irradiation accelerated the deposition of suberin and lignin at wounds by activating phenylpropanoid metabolism in potato tubers

Xuejiao Zhang et al.

Summary: UV-C can directly deactivate pathogens and reduce postharvest diseases of fruits and vegetables by inducing resistance. However, whether UV-C can accelerate the wound healing of potato tubers has not been studied. The results of this study showed that UV-C irradiation up-regulated the expression of certain genes and activated enzymatic reactions involved in wound healing, leading to decreased weight loss and disease index in the treated tubers. Overall, UV-C irradiation can be utilized as a simple and cost-effective technology for accelerating wound healing of potato tubers.

ABA signaling mediates 5-aminolevulinic acid-induced anthocyanin biosynthesis in red pear fruits

Xiaoyun Cao et al.

Summary: This study confirmed the effects of exogenous 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) on anthocyanin biosynthesis in red pear fruits and elucidated the role of abscisic acid (ABA) in ALA-induced anthocyanin accumulation. ALA treatment promoted the accumulation of arbutin, flavonol, and anthocyanin, and upregulated the expression of genes associated with anthocyanin synthesis. Additionally, ALA treatment increased endogenous ABA content and the expression of ABA biosynthesis-related genes. The results suggest that ABA signaling plays a crucial role in ALA-induced anthocyanin accumulation in red pear fruits.

Metabolomic profile combined with transcriptomic analysis reveals the value of UV-C in improving the utilization of waste grape berries

Kekun Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of UV-C treatment on grape berries, showing that UV-C can promote the accumulation of phenolic components in grapes, thereby enhancing the application value of waste grapes. UV-C treatment at different developmental stages led to changes in grape berry appearance and sugar content, with the most significant effects seen in the veraison stage. UV-C also upregulated genes related to transcription factors, protein modification, and various plant hormones, suggesting its potential for improving the nutritional quality of grapes.

Postharvest UV-C irradiation increased the flavonoids and anthocyanins accumulation, phenylpropanoid pathway gene expression, and antioxidant activity in sweet cherries (Prunus avium L.)

Qiang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that UV-C irradiation can increase the levels of total phenolics, flavonoids, and anthocyanins in sweet cherries during storage. Furthermore, UV-C treatment upregulated the enzyme activity and gene expression related to the phenylpropanoid pathway, contributing to the understanding of flavonoids and anthocyanins biosynthesis under UV-C irradiation.
