GHG Global Emission Prediction of Synthetic N Fertilizers Using Expectile Regression Techniques

Kaoutar Benghzial et al.

Summary: Agriculture is a major contributor to nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, primarily due to the improper use of nitrogen-based fertilizers. N2O emissions from agriculture have direct and indirect impacts on the environment, posing a threat to sustainability and food production. Understanding the relationship between global synthetic N fertilizer use and N2O emissions is crucial for addressing climate change.

Assessing the climate change mitigation potential from food waste composting

Tibisay Perez et al.

Summary: Food waste is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in landfills. Composting food waste has the potential to reduce emissions, but there is a lack of data on commercial-scale emissions and their drivers. This study measured methane, nitrous oxide, and carbon dioxide emissions during food waste composting and found that the emission factors were primarily driven by redox and watering events. The overall emission factor for food waste composting was lower than landfilling, suggesting that composting can help mitigate emissions.

Nitrogen use efficiency-a key to enhance crop productivity under a changing climate

Prabhu Govindasamy et al.

Summary: Nitrogen is essential for plant growth, but only 50% of applied nitrogen is effectively used by crops, with the rest being lost to the environment. This has negative impacts on farmer's returns and environmental pollution. Improving nitrogen use efficiency is critical.

Greenhouse Gas and Air Pollutant Emissions from Composting

Sarah L. Nordahl et al.

Summary: Composting can divert organic waste from landfills, reduce landfill methane emissions, and recycle nutrients back to soils. However, the composting process is also a source of greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions, and reported emission factors are difficult to interpret and highly variable.

Biochar as an Alternative Soil Amendment for Establishment of Northern Highbush Blueberry

Bryan K. Sales et al.

Summary: Biochar, as a soil amendment, can improve plant growth and increase fruit yield. Field study showed that soil amended with biochar significantly increased growth and yield of blueberries compared to unamended soil or soil amended with sawdust. Adding biochar to the planting hole was more cost-effective than applying it to the row.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion is widely used to produce biogas from food waste, but a significant amount of nutrient-rich food waste anaerobic digestate (FWD) remains under-utilised. FWD has potential as a nutrient source for microalgal cultivation and biofuel production, and emerging technologies like thermal conversion show promise in converting FWD into value-added products like biochar/hydrochar. Integrated AD with valorisation facilities is encouraged to achieve complete resource utilisation and reduce carbon emissions.
