Ancestral BPA exposure caused defects in the liver of medaka for four generations

Sourav Chakraborty et al.

Summary: Environmental chemical exposures can result in the transgenerational passage of liver defects in subsequent generations, even in an uncontaminated environment. Ancestral exposure to BPA can lead to transgenerational metabolic diseases, with the severity of NAFLD phenotype being sexually dimorphic. Developing methods and strategies to mitigate the transgenerational onset of metabolic diseases is crucial for protecting future generations.

Co-immobilization of multi-enzyme cascade system into the metal-organic frameworks for the removal of Bisphenol A

Hassan Babaei et al.

Summary: The researchers developed a self-controlled cascade system using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) incorporated with glucose oxidase (GOx) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP). This system showed efficient catalysis for oxidizing and detoxifying toxic organic substrates, such as bisphenol A (BPA). The MOFs provided a protective shield for enzymes and facilitated the diffusion/permeation of substrates/products, while GOx's in situ production of organic acid activated HRP.

Carbon vacancies in porous g-C3N4 nanosheets induced robust H2O2 production for highly efficient photocatalysis-self-Fenton system for metronidazole degradation

Rujin Li et al.

Summary: In this paper, porous g-C3N4 nanosheets with carbon vacancies (Cv-PCNNS) were developed for efficient metronidazole degradation via the photocatalysis-self-Fenton system. The carbon vacancies in the Cv-PCNNS accelerated photo-induced charge separation and improved O2 activation. The Cv-PCNNS also provided H for photocatalytic O2 reduction to H2O2 and captured H from the surroundings to restore their original appearance. The introduction of carbon vacancies increased the H2O2 production rate and enhanced the metronidazole degradation efficiency.

Immobilization of Enzymes on Cyclodextrin-Anchored Dehiscent Mesoporous TiO2 for Efficient Photoenzymatic Hydroxylation

Feifei Jia et al.

Summary: A three-in-one heterogeneous catalyst (UPO@dTiO(2)-CD) was developed by grafting cyclodextrins (CDs) on the surface of dehiscent TiO2 (dTiO(2)) and immobilizing unspecific peroxygenase (rAaeUPO). The catalyst showed enhanced electron and mass transfer due to the unique properties of dTiO(2) and CDs. By coordinating the photocatalytic and enzymatic steps, the optimized UPO@dTiO(2)-CD exhibited high catalytic efficiency, stability, and reusability.

Unraveling the dual defect sites in graphite carbon nitride for ultra-high photocatalytic H2O2 evolution

Xu Zhang et al.

Summary: Defect engineering modified graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4) with dual defect sites, -C N groups and N vacancies, has been found to significantly enhance the photocatalytic production of H2O2. The dual defect sites form an electron-rich structure and lead to a more localized charge density distribution, which improves light absorption, carrier separation, selectivity, and activity of H2O2 generation. The N vacancies effectively adsorb and activate O-2, while the -C N groups facilitate the adsorption of H+, synergistically promoting H2O2 generation. The modified g-C3N4 achieved a high H2O2 generation rate and apparent quantum efficiency, surpassing previously reported g-C3N4-based photocatalysts.

Iodide ions enhancing sulfamerazine degradation by horseradish peroxidase/H2O2: Degradation products, degradation mechanism and toxicity assessment

Jiali Wang et al.

Summary: Biocatalytic treatment using horseradish peroxidase (HRP) is a sustainable technology for removing antibiotics from wastewater. The addition of iodide ion (I-) significantly increases the degradation efficiency of sulfadiazine (SMR). The main mechanism of iodide ion promoting SMR degradation is related to the existing forms of iodine. This study provides technical support for developing a feasible and sustainable sulfanilamide-containing wastewater treatment solution, and also provides reference for the fate and risk assessment of sulfonamide antibiotics in the environment.

Spatiotemporal distribution, source apportionment and risk assessment of typical hormones and phenolic endocrine disrupting chemicals in environmental and biological samples from the mariculture areas in the Pearl River Delta, China

Yupeng Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the levels, distribution, sources, ecological, and human health risks of hormones and phenolic endocrine disrupting chemicals in the mariculture areas of the Pearl River Delta in China. The research found that contaminant levels were higher in shellfish compared to fish, and that the pollution was a result of coastal anthropogenic discharges and mariculture activities. The hazard quotient values of the contaminants indicated no immediate human health risk. This study is significant for scientific mariculture management, land-based pollution control, ecosystem protection, and safeguarding human health.
