Restoration feasibility study by using alkali activated mortars based on Mt. Etna volcanic ash: The case study of Monreale Cathedral (Palermo, Italy)

Maura Fugazzotto et al.

Summary: This paper presents a case-study of alkali activated mortars based on volcanic-ash being used directly on-site at the Monreale Cathedral in Sicily, Italy, a UNESCO Heritage site. The application focused on repairing damaged mosaic areas by filling gaps, repositioning detached tesserae, replicating the decorations, and creating new tesserae. The study highlights the challenges and improvements made during the preparation process, as well as the successful long-term results of the intervention.

New chemical and mineralogical data on mosaics from the South aisle wall of Monreale Cathedral (Italy)

Alessia Coccato et al.

Summary: An archaeometric investigation was conducted on the materials used in the mosaic decoration of Monreale Cathedral, Italy. The study employed Raman spectroscopy, portable X-ray Fluorescence, and X-ray diffraction to analyze fallen glass tesserae and efflorescences. The investigation revealed information about the manufacturing technique and raw materials used in the mosaics.

Unique wood ash Co-coloured glass tessera from mediaeval Madonna: Raman spectroscopic study of production technology

Zdenka Cermakova et al.

Summary: This study examines a wood ash glass tessera in detail, which was part of a statue in Poland created in the 14th century and destroyed during World War Two. The analysis reveals that the tessera was colored by cobalt, possibly influenced by copper, and opacified by Ca-phosphate. It also identifies two new phases, indicating the originality of the tessera and a higher production temperature.

Correlation between surface roughness and spectral features in IR-reflection spectroscopy

Claudia Invernizzi et al.

Summary: This study investigated modifications of IR spectral features on surfaces with different average roughness using non-contact infrared reflection spectroscopy. The study found that the ER spectra were generally more resolved and cleaner compared to the DR ones, providing a more effective reflection of surface roughness variations.
