Stability Analysis of an Industrial Blade Accounting for a Blade-Tip/Casing Nonlinear Interface

Yann Colaitis et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the local stability analysis of periodic solutions of an industrial compressor blade’s nonlinear vibration response, where different types of nonlinearities are applied. It proposes a harmonic balance method-based approach that accounts for unilateral contact and dry friction through a penalty law. The paper also uses a Lanczos filtering technique to mitigate spurious oscillations, and a component mode synthesis technique to reduce the dimension of the model. The stability assessment of the solutions is performed through Floquet theory and two methodologies, and the results show the efficiency of Hill's method for industrial models.

Effect of dry friction on a parametric nonlinear oscillator

S. Benacchio et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of dry friction on the dynamical behavior of a nonlinear parametric oscillator. The harmonic balance method and the method of varying amplitudes are used to find the solutions of the equation and their stability. It is found that the presence of dry friction leads to disconnected trivial and nontrivial solutions of the oscillator, requiring careful selection of initial conditions to obtain periodic solutions.

Parametric study on internal resonances for a simplified nonlinear blade model

Nicolas Di Palma et al.

Summary: This article aims to determine and identify the physical contributions that drive the internal resonance between the bending and torsion modes of a blade. A nonlinear beam model with warping, twist, and pre-bending is used, and a discretization scheme based on Rayleigh-Ritz approximation is performed. Modal properties are compared and validated using beam theory and finite element modeling. The Harmonic Balance Method and a branch switching algorithm are employed to obtain frequency responses near the second bending mode and locate bifurcated branches related to internal resonances. The study highlights the importance of certain coupling parameters involving bending and torsion displacements in driving the internal resonance, which is also observed in a rotating situation due to the hardening of the bending mode.

On Harmonic Balance Method-based Lagrangian contact formulations for vibro-impact problems

Thibaut Vadcard et al.

Summary: This article assesses two numerical strategies based on the Harmonic Balance Method for characterizing the periodic response of a mechanical system with unilateral contact constraints. The study compares the Linear Complementarity Problem (LCP-HBM) and Dynamic Lagrangian Frequency Time (DLFT-HBM) methods and finds that the DLFT-HBM is asymptotically equivalent to the LCP-HBM. The study also highlights the non-physical high harmonics generated by oversampling time signals.

Summary: Algebra is used to study the approximate responses of nonlinear dynamical systems and trace the solutions of approximated bifurcation diagrams. It involves searching for approximated periodic solutions of nonlinear ordinary differential equations and obtaining polynomial equations. The methodology presented in this study allows for the detection of a maximal number of solutions, including those belonging to isolated frequency response curves of the system.

Thibaut Vadcard et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the analysis of rubbing interactions between a rotating fan blade and a rigid casing using frequency domain methods. Two different methodologies based on Harmonic Balance Method are assessed and compared with a time-domain numerical strategy. The results show good agreement between the different strategies and the reference approach. An in-depth analysis of the main modal contributions for each solution is also presented.

Stability analysis of periodic solutions computed for blade-tip/casing contact problems

Y. Colaitis et al.

Summary: This article focuses on the stability assessment of mechanical systems with a nonlinear interface and unilateral contact constraints. By using the regularized-Lanczos harmonic balance method, periodic solutions for each system are computed. Different stability assessment numerical algorithms, including the Newmark 2n-pass method and Hill's method using eigenvalue sorting, are implemented to investigate their convergence and accuracy. The gradually increasing complexity of the considered mechanical systems provides insights into the best-suited stability assessment numerical algorithm for dealing with contact nonlinearities. Attention is also paid to specific developments that enhance the numerical efficiency of the stability assessment process, such as the iterative solver, computation of analytical derivatives, problem scaling, and the use of fast Fourier transforms. The influence of the Lanczos filtering procedure on stability assessment is also examined. The article concludes that both the Newmark 2n-pass method and Hill's method are applicable to large industrial systems with a nonlinear interface, but Hill's method has faster convergence and may be a better option for accurate and efficient stability assessment, with Lanczos filtering having a negligible influence.

Summary: This study focuses on the phase resonance of nonlinear mechanical systems subjected to single-point, single-harmonic excitation. The main contribution is to develop a computational framework which can predict the mode shapes and oscillation frequencies at phase resonance. The resulting nonlinear modes are termed phase resonance nonlinear modes (PRNMs) and accurately characterize superharmonic, subharmonic, and ultrasubharmonic resonances.

The harmonic balance method with arc-length continuation in blade-tip/casing contact problems

Y. Colaitis et al.

Summary: This article introduces a numerical strategy based on the Harmonic Balance Method to characterize the dynamics of a compressor blade when structural contacts occur with the surrounding casing. The proposed methodology shows accuracy in predicting displacements, contact forces, velocities, and stress fields within the blade compared to a time integration-based reference numerical strategy. Additionally, the methodology is able to capture the exact location of the blade's nonlinear resonance, which the reference time integration-based numerical strategy cannot achieve.
