Frosting characteristics of superhydrophobic surface under desublimation frosting conditions

Feng Wang et al.

Summary: The frosting type of an air source heat pump can be divided into condensation frosting and desublimation frosting. A visual frosting experiment system was used to investigate the frosting characteristics of a superhydrophobic surface under desublimation conditions, and it was found that the frost growth process is similar to condensation frosting. The frost thickness on the superhydrophobic surface was significantly less than that on the bare surface under desublimation conditions, indicating that the superhydrophobic surface can effectively inhibit frost layer growth. The preferential formation of condensation frosting on the superhydrophobic surface under desublimation conditions is due to the larger nucleation critical radius, nucleation barrier, and nucleus surviving rate required for desublimation compared to condensation.

The frost restraining effect of solar air collector applied to air source heat pump

Yan Jiang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the use of a triangular solar air collector to restrain frost formation on the evaporator surface of an air source heat pump. A dynamic heat transfer model and quasi-steady-state frosting model were established and coupled, taking into account the effect of frost layer thickness variation on evaporator airflow. The results demonstrate that the triangular solar air collector effectively reduces frost thickness by more than 15% and increases the total heat flux by 101.4 W/m2 under frosting conditions, leading to a 36.6% increase in heat exchange of the evaporator during a typical day.

Electric-heater defrosting performance of frost-free refrigerator-freezer and its improvement by step-reduction power

Rijing Zhao et al.

Summary: This article studied the performance and improvement of electric-heater defrosting for a side-by-side refrigerator-freezer. It was found that 200 W was the optimal constant power, with the lowest energy consumption of 118.8 W·h and a mild freezer-temperature rise of 9.9 K in a 36.0 min duration. A numerical model was then built to simulate the defrost process, revealing a low defrost efficiency due to the mismatch between reducing frost mass and constant heater power. To address this issue, a step-reduction power method was proposed, resulting in a 27.1% reduction in energy consumption with similar duration and freezer-temperature rise. These findings can provide guidance for improving defrost performance in the refrigerator-freezer industry.

Robust metallic-based superhydrophobic composite with rigid micro-skeleton structure for anti-icing/frosting

Guannan Ju et al.

Summary: A robust superhydrophobic composite with a rigid micro-skeleton structure was fabricated using an equipment-free and low-cost dip-coating method. The composite exhibited excellent water-repellent properties due to the rigid micro-skeleton formed by chromium microparticles and low-surface-energy coating-modified copper powders. The composite also displayed durability against abrasion, corrosion, temperature processes, and UV irradiation, and demonstrated good anti-icing/frosting performance at -20 degrees Celsius.

An experimental study on the plate edge effect of frosting characteristics for horizontal flat cold plates with surface wettability considered

Gao Runmiao et al.

Summary: In this study, frosting experiments were conducted on cold plates with different surface wettability under forced convection. The results show that superhydrophobic surfaces have fewer and smaller condensed droplets in the edge-affected regions compared to hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces. As the surface wettability increases, the average equivalent contact diameter and coverage area ratio of condensed droplets decrease. Additionally, the freezing propagation velocity and frost layer growth rate are lower and higher on superhydrophobic surfaces, respectively, compared to hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces. The study provides insights for anti-frosting in practical applications.

Performance of the frosting characteristics of fin-and-tube heat exchanger subject to superhydrophobic coating

Kai-Shing Yang et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the condensation and freezing processes of fin-and-tube heat exchangers with and without a superhydrophobic coating. The effects of air velocities, relative humidity, and fin spacings on the performance of the heat exchangers were reported. It was found that the superhydrophobic coating can delay frosting at high humidity and air velocity, but may cause water bridges and reduce heat transfer rate.

Superhydrophobic heat exchangers delay frost formation and reduce defrost energy input of aircraft environmental control systems

Joe Koszut et al.

Summary: Commercial aircraft operate in extreme atmospheric conditions, and the efficiency of the environmental control system (ECS) can be affected by frosting of the air cycle machine (ACM) condenser. Applying a superhydrophobic coating to the condenser can effectively prevent frost growth and improve the overall efficiency of the ECS.

Experimental study on anti-frosting performance of superhydrophobic surface under high humidity conditions

Feng Wang et al.

Summary: The ambient humidity has a significant influence on the frosting characteristics of a superhydrophobic surface. Under high humidity conditions, the surface can delay the freezing time and maintain good anti-frosting performance despite the merging and self-jumping of condensate droplets at the early stage of frosting.
