Mixed mode fracture parameters and fracture characteristics of diorite using cracked straight through Brazilian disc specimen

Quanqi Zhu et al.

Summary: The cracked straight through Brazilian disc (CSTBD) specimen was used to investigate the I/II mixed mode static fracture of diorite in this study. The results showed that the fracture mechanical behavior and trajectories were influenced by the crack angle. Fracture energy and crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) were characterized, and a fracture energy calculation method considering primary crack growth was proposed. The proposed EEMTSN criterion had the best prediction effect on the mixed mode fracture toughness of diorite.

Thermal fatigue and cracking behaviors of asphalt mixtures under different temperature variations

Yao Luo et al.

Summary: Thermal cracking is a common issue in asphalt pavements, caused by extremely low temperature and thermal fatigue from repeated temperature variations. This study comprehensively investigates the thermal fatigue properties and cracking behaviors of asphalt mixtures through experiments and numerical analysis. The results show that the magnitude of thermal stress increases with a decrease in temperature range and an acceleration of cooling rate. Additionally, the height of pre-crack has a significant effect on the number of temperature cycles.

Experimental and theoretical framework for illustrating the dependency of fracture toughness with tensile, bending, and compression loading in asphaltic samples

Xiaoyong Gu et al.

Summary: The opening mode fracture behavior of asphalt mixture was investigated experimentally and theoretically using three different types of disk-shaped specimens. The results showed that the loading type significantly affected the cracking resistance, with specimens loaded in diametral compression exhibiting lower fracture toughness than those loaded under tension. By considering the effect of stress term and employing modified maximum normal strain theory, the mode I test data were theoretically predicted.

Summary: Long-term vapor exposure weakens the bonding strength in asphalt concrete, accelerating cracking initiation and propagation. Damage mainly occurs at the interface between aggregates and mortar due to high stress. This study reveals the fracture performance of asphalt concrete under long-term vapor exposure and provides insights for preventing premature cracking in pavement.

Low-temperature fracture characteristics of asphalt mixtures using the eccentric single-edge notched bend test: A 3D discrete element study

Han-Cheng Dan et al.

Summary: This study used the three-dimensional discrete element method (DEM) to evaluate 16 different configurations of the single-edge notched bend (SENB) test with different notch offset levels. The simulation results were analyzed from macroscopic and mesoscopic perspectives. The macroscopic analysis revealed three types of crack morphology and explained the factors affecting the main crack deflection angle. The study also found that low-temperature crack resistance is influenced by beam bending deformation and microcrack damage evolution. At the meso-level, the DEM model provided a realistic visualization of the crack propagation process and accurately captured the mesoscopic contact failure mechanism.

Summary: This study proposed a method to test the mode II fracture behaviors of hot mix asphalt (HMA) and examined the effects of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and rejuvenator on the mode II fracture performance of HMA. Results indicated that with the increase of RAP, the fracture performance of HMA decreased, while the use of rejuvenator benefited the mode II fracture resistance.

Effect of RAP and glass fiber on mode I fracture behaviors of ultra-thin friction course

Weimin Song et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and glass fiber on the fracture behaviors of ultra-thin friction course (UTFC) at low and intermediate temperatures. The results showed that the incorporation of RAP weakened the fracture resistance of UTFC at low temperature, while the addition of glass fiber counteracted this adverse effect. UTFC exhibited the best cracking resistance at intermediate temperature, but the incorporation of RAP deteriorated the fracture resistance. The addition of both RAP and glass fiber further deteriorated the fracture performance, possibly due to the non-uniform distribution of fiber.

Investigation on the Feasibility of Different Semicircular Bend Methods for Asphalt Concrete

Summary: This study explores the mixed fracture performance of asphalt concrete by changing the position of the support and notch or changing the notch angle. The measured fracture toughness ratios are lower than the theoretical value, but the empirical model has higher accuracy. The semicircular bend method with changed support and notch positions is stable and repeatable, which may be preferred for evaluating the mixed fracture performance of asphalt concrete in the future.

On the comparison of two mixed-mode I plus III fracture test specimens

A. Bahmani et al.

Summary: This study compared two test specimens, ENDB and ENDC, for measuring mixed-mode I+III fracture toughness. The loading type significantly affected the fracture parameters, with ENDC exhibiting more stable mixed-mode fracture but sensitivity to crack inclination angle rotation. The optimal crack length for measuring mixed-mode I+III fracture toughness was found in the ENDB specimen, while pure mode III fracture toughness was greater in the ENDC specimen. Various parameters, including T-stress, influenced the differences in fracture toughness values measured via both specimens.

Sheng Zhang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the fracture process zone and fracture toughness test value increase linearly with sample size, but gradually stabilize in a larger size range. The reason for the size effect is that with the increase in size, the release of stored energy also increases, leading to the size effect of fracture toughness and fracture process zone.

Influence of basalt fiber on mode I and II fracture properties of asphalt mixture at medium and low temperatures

Qinglin Guo et al.

Summary: Basalt fiber effectively improves the critical fracture energy of asphalt mixture at medium and low temperatures, while reducing the critical stress intensity factor at 20 degrees C. The reinforcing effect of basalt fiber is optimal for mixed mode fracture. The generalized maximum tangential stress (GMTS) criterion is suitable for predicting the fracture initiation angle, and the linear empirical fracture criterion has good applicability to control and basalt fiber reinforced asphalt mixtures.

Fracture investigation of asphalt mixtures containing reclaimed asphalt pavement using an equivalent energy approach

Weimin Song et al.

Summary: Asphalt concrete exhibits different fracture behaviors at low and intermediate temperatures, with stress intensity factor (K-IC) and energy release rate (J-integral) commonly used to evaluate fracture performance. This study introduced an equivalent stress intensity factor (K*(IC)) to assess the fracture toughness of asphalt concrete at a wider temperature range. Test results indicate that the addition of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) enhances fracture performance at intermediate temperatures. Furthermore, the use of a rejuvenator was found to be effective in improving fracture resistance at both low and intermediate temperatures.
