Integrated quantum optical phase sensor in thin film lithium niobate

Hubert S. Stokowski et al.

Summary: The research focuses on the limitation of optical phase sensors due to the quantum noise of light. To overcome this, an engineered source of squeezed states is introduced to suppress the noise and improve the phase detection sensitivity. A photonic integrated circuit in thin-film lithium niobate is designed and used to generate squeezed states with the same frequency as the pump light, allowing for circuit control and sensing with electro-optics. The results show (2.7 +/- 0.2)% squeezing when using 26.2 milliwatts of optical power, and it is applied to increase the signal-to-noise ratio of phase measurement. Such low-power and integrated photonic systems have great potential in advancing quantum optical sensing.

A novel of WS2-MoCuO3 supported with graphene quantum dot as counter electrode for dye-sensitized solar cells application

Yonrapach Areerob et al.

Summary: A novel tungsten disulfide-molybdenum copper oxide composite supported with graphene quantum dots (WM@GQDs) was synthesized as a counter electrode (CE) for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) using a simple and low-cost ultrasonication method. The unique structure of WM@GQDs showed excellent power conversion efficiency due to its high catalytic activity and charge transport properties. The graphene quantum dots (GQDs) in the composite provided more active sites for a redox reaction, leading to improved electrical and optical properties.

Reduced Graphene Oxide Embedded with ZnS Nanoparticles as Catalytic Cathodic Material for Li-S Batteries

Roberto Colombo et al.

Summary: In this study, a composite material based on doped reduced graphene oxide embedded with zinc sulfide nanoparticles was synthesized using a facile and solvent-free microwave method. The composite material showed improved battery performance, with a higher specific capacity at high rate and enhanced cycling stability. The heteroatomic doping process and the presence of zinc sulfide nanoparticles played a beneficial role in reducing polysulfide loss and improving redox kinetics.

Theoretical study on on-chip gain characteristics of Er3+in LiNbO3-on-insulator photonic wire pumped at 980 nm wavelength

Feng Chen et al.

Summary: This paper theoretically studies the amplification of 1.53 μm in 980 nm-pumped Er3+-doped lithium niobate on insulator (Er:LNOI) photonic wire (PW) and Ti:Er:LiNbO3 waveguide based on three- and six-level models. The study shows that the Er:LNOI PW has a larger Er3+ population inversion extent and better gain performance compared to Ti:Er:LiNbO3.

Highly performing graphene-based field effect transistor for the differentiation between mild-moderate-severe myocardial injury

Teresa Rodrigues et al.

Summary: Cardiovascular diseases result in millions of deaths globally, and early identification and prevention can significantly reduce the mortality rate. This study demonstrates the exceptional properties of an aptamer modified graphene-based FET for specific sensing of cardiac troponin I in different bodily fluids. The sensor allows real-time detection of cardiac troponin I within the clinically important range, enabling differentiation between individuals with different risks for myocardial infarction. The results show promise for the development of a point-of-care device for troponin I sensing in clinical settings.

A dimethyl disulfide gas sensor based on nanosized Pt-loaded tetrakaidecahedral α-Fe2O3 nanocrystals

Ziqin Zhuang et al.

Summary: Surface modification with precious metals is an effective method to enhance the gas-sensing performance of metal oxide semiconductors. In this study, pure α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles and Pt-modified α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles were prepared using a simple hydrothermal synthesis and impregnation method. The Pt-α-Fe2O3 nanocomposite sensor exhibited a higher response value and shorter response/recovery time to DMDS gas, as well as better selectivity compared to other target gases. This research suggests that the Pt-α-Fe2O3 nanoparticle sensor shows promise as a cost-effective and efficient DMDS gas sensor.

Designing a double-coated cathode with high entropy oxides by microwave-assisted hydrothermal synthesis for highly stable Li-S batteries

Roberto Colombo et al.

Summary: Li-S batteries are considered a promising alternative to Li-ion technology due to their high specific capacity and lower environmental impact and production costs. The shuttle effect, which involves the migration of lithium polysulfides from the cathode to the anode, is a major problem that affects Li-S batteries. This study presents a strategy to address the shuttle effect and improve the kinetics at the cathode by coating a functional layer of high entropy oxides onto the sulfur cathode. The HEO-coated cathode significantly improves the electrochemical performance of the Li-S battery, achieving high discharge capacity and capacity retention over cycles.
