Composition-dependent photocatalytic activity and high-mobility carrier gas in NaTaO3/BaBiO3 heterojunctions

Guilherme Ribeiro Portugal et al.

Summary: In this study, the general features of monoclinic (001) NaTaO3/BaBiO3 heterojunctions were theoretically investigated, exploring the influence of interface creation on their physicochemical properties. The results showed that a superlattice with 24 wt.% of BaBiO3 exhibited the desired electronic structure for photocatalytic reactions, with an intermediate band gap and highly dispersive energy levels. Increasing the number of BaBiO3 layers led to a semiconductor-to-metal transition and the formation of a high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the interface. This research highlights the importance of such nanojunctions for both photocatalysis and nanoelectronics applications.

Local inversion-symmetry breaking in a bismuthate high-Tc superconductor

S. Griffitt et al.

Summary: Superconductivity was found in (Ba,K)BiO3, which broke inversion symmetry locally but preserved it on large length scales. By studying the local structure of Ba1-xKxBiO3 using diffuse x-ray scattering and Monte Carlo modeling, it was discovered that there was no evidence of disproportionation, resolving the conundrum about its metallic and superconducting states. Instead, nanoscale structural correlations that broke inversion symmetry were found, which has significant implications for electronic physics.

Correlation-driven metal-insulator transition in unconventional magnetic metal superoxides

Sarajit Biswas et al.

Summary: Through first-principles electronic structure calculations, we have extensively studied the electronic and magnetic properties of alkali sodium superoxide (NaO2) and potassium superoxide (KO2) at high and low temperatures. The properties of NaO2 and KO2 are controlled by the unpaired electron donated by the alkali atoms to the O atoms, forming dimers. Structural phase transitions occur in both systems to minimize orbital fluctuations and result in complex linking of their orbital and spin degrees of freedom. The magnetic properties are controlled by the orientation of the O2δ- dimers, which change along with the changing orientation. The different lifting of degeneracy in the O-π* manifold is due to the intrinsic difference in the electrostatic interaction between the alkali ion cages and the O2δ- dimers. The correlation-induced metal-insulator transition (MIT) occurs in both systems due to complete orbital ordering (OO) and electron correlation. K doping in NaO2 induces a MIT at a higher temperature, suggesting the possibility of MIT in Rb/Cs-doped NaO2 at higher temperatures.

Topological field-effect transistor with quantized ON/OFF conductance of helical/chiral dislocation states

Xiaoyin Li et al.

Summary: Researchers demonstrate a proof-of-concept topological field-effect transistor (TFET) that has both ON and OFF quantized conductance by switching between helical and chiral topological screw dislocation (SD) states in three-dimensional topological insulators. Reversible field switching is achieved by configuring a pair of SDs, with one acting as a channel and the other as a gate controlled by a local magnetic field. Tight-binding quantum transport calculations show ON and OFF conductance values of 2e2/h and e2/h, respectively. BaBiO3 is identified as a candidate material for achieving the desired topological SD states based on first-principles calculations. This discovery opens up a new route to high-fidelity topological quantum devices.

Growth and photo-response of (110) oriented BaBiO3 films on SrTiO3 (001) substrates

Mitsuhiro Muta et al.

Summary: Preferred orientation and optical responses were investigated for BaBiO3 films grown by pulsed laser deposition. The films exhibited monoclinic symmetry I2/m and a (110) preferred orientation. The estimated optical bandgaps were around 2.3 eV for direct transition and 2.1 eV for indirect transition. The decay time of photoconductivity was found to be approximately 0.48 sec. The relationship between ultraviolet light-induced photoconductivity and film crystallinity was clarified, with high-quality crystalline BaBiO3 films exhibiting lower photoconductivity, contrary to TiO2 films.

Novel ferromagnetism and negative magnetoresistance in BaBiO3 nanoparticles

Kavil Veettil Shilna et al.

Summary: This study reports a novel ferromagnetic behavior and negative magnetoresistance in the non-magnetic semiconductor perovskite material BaBiO3 at room temperature. The researchers discuss these effects based on a model of defect-induced magnetic centers and magnetic domains in the material. They observe enhanced magnetization and exchange spring-like behavior in the sample annealed at a higher temperature, and attribute it to a higher number of magnetic defects and two dominant sizes of magnetic clusters. Photoluminescence and energy dispersive X-ray spectra corroborate the explanation based on charge-induced defects in the material. The interplay of Bi3+ and Bi5+ states in BaBiO3 leads to a semiconducting behavior at room temperature.

Summary: The Jahn-Teller effect and anti-Jahn-Teller effect are symmetry-breaking phenomena caused by ions in crystal structures. In this study, the anti-Jahn-Teller effect was successfully induced by THz laser illumination in BaBiO3 material, and an insulator-to-metal transition on the picosecond timescale was observed.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanism of charge disproportionation in BaBiO3, finding that different hybridizations lead to different oxidation states in the material, validated through a combination of X-ray spectroscopic experiments and first-principle calculations. Additionally, the nature of charge disproportionation varies at room temperature and 200K.

Thickness-Dependent Band Gap Modification in BaBiO3

Rosa Luca Bouwmeester et al.

Summary: The study confirms the influence of BaBiO3 thickness on the oxygen breathing mode and band gap size, finding that decreasing film thickness leads to a transition from a wide-gap semiconductor to a small-gap one. Even for ultra-thin BaBiO3 films, no metallic state is present.
