Evaluation of SPT-N values and internal friction angle correlation using artificial intelligence methods in granular soils

Arda Burak Ekmen

Summary: In this study, artificial neural networks (ANNs) and genetic algorithms (GAs) were used to calculate the internal friction angle (phi) values for granular soils, and the results were compared with empirical equations and experimental results. It was found that ANNs showed reasonable correlation with experimental results compared to GAs and empirical equations. By utilizing a large number of data sets obtained from different regions, ANNs can improve the empirical equations indicating the relationship between soil parameters and test data such as SPT and CPT.

Numerical investigation on rock fragmentation under decoupled charge blasting

Xudong Li et al.

Summary: In this study, rock fragmentation induced by blasting using decoupled charge was investigated using finite element modelling and image-processing. The results showed that decreasing the decoupling ratio resulted in smaller rock fragments and narrower fragmentation size distribution. Additionally, changing the coupling medium from air to water and altering the decoupled charge mode from radial to axial also led to smaller fragment sizes and narrower fragmentation size distribution.
