Noise suppression for phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer based on non-local means filtering

Summary: This paper investigates the noise suppression effect of three intrusion cases processed by fast NLM in Phi-OTDR, including single-position intrusion, double-position intrusion and riding along the optical cable, utilizing both simulations and experiments. Parameters of both search window and smoothing control parameter are adjusted to study the regularities of NSR, PSNR, and SSIM in the intrusion cases, with the optimal NLM parameters discussed in field tests. The results show that NSR, PSNR, and SSIM increase to a constant level with the increase of search window, while PSNR and SSIM initially increase and then decrease as the smoothing control parameter increases.
