Hydrogen-rich water delays fruit softening and prolongs shelf life of postharvest okras

Wanqi Dong et al.

Summary: The effect of hydrogen-rich water (HRW) treatment on softening, cell wall components, and cell wall metabolic genes in postharvest okras was studied. The results showed that HRW treatment could delay softening, maintain fruit firmness, and extend shelf life. This was achieved by altering cell wall components, up-regulating biosynthesis genes, and down-regulating degradative genes at different stages of storage.

Loss of Rose Fragrance under Chilling Stress Is Associated with Changes in DNA Methylation and Volatile Biosynthesis

Limei Xie et al.

Summary: Rose plants are widely cultivated as cut flowers with economic value as sources of fragrance and flavoring. Chilling temperature reduces aromatic volatile emissions in roses, which is correlated with the changes in DNA methylation patterns and gene expression involved in volatile biosynthesis. The study highlights the importance of epigenetic regulation in the chilling tolerance of roses and its practical significance in the production of edible roses.

Melatonin induces resistance against Penicillium expansum in apple fruit through enhancing phenylpropanoid metabolism

Miao Wang et al.

Summary: Apple fruit is a delicious fruit with great economic value. However, harvested apples are susceptible to the infection of Penicillium expansum, which results in quality degradation. This study found that melatonin treatment can significantly suppress the lesion development of P. expansum-infected apple fruit and improve the accumulation of metabolites in phenylpropanoid metabolism and the activity of key enzymes.

Melatonin Enhances the Postharvest Disease Resistance of Blueberries Fruit by Modulating the Jasmonic Acid Signaling Pathway and Phenylpropanoid Metabolites

Guangfan Qu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the physiological and molecular mechanisms of melatonin inhibiting postharvest rot in blueberry fruits. Melatonin treatment did not significantly inhibit the growth or germination of certain fungi. However, it increased the enzymatic activities and upregulated genes related to phenylpropane pathway and jasmonic acid signaling pathway. This leads to enhanced disease resistance in blueberry fruits through the accumulation of certain compounds.
