Tensile behavior analysis of CFRP (carbon-fiber-reinforced-polymer)-titanium joint under preload

Haiyin Li et al.

Summary: Compared to traditional bonding and bolting, the hybrid connection has gained attention for its superior mechanical properties. This study investigates the effect of preload on the tensile behavior of CFRP/titanium alloy hybrid joints. It is found that preload can effectively reduce stress concentration and enhance the strength of mechanically fastened joints. However, excessive preload may lead to deformations or even failure in certain types of bolted joints.

Summary: This study used novel joint treatments to strengthen carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. Vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs) were grown in situ on the catalyst-treated CF surface using the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method, forming an integrated structure. The resin pre-coating (RPC) technique was further employed to eliminate void defects and enhance the flexural strength of the CFRP composites. The results showed significant improvement in flexural strength and change in failure mode with the joint treatments.

Comparative Study of Resin and Silane Coupling Agents Coating Treatments on Bonding Strength Improvement of Titanium and Carbon Fiber Composites

Shihao Zuo et al.

Summary: In this study, anodizing treatment was used to etch titanium substrates' surface and create nano-cavities. The reinforcement effect of adhesive bonding strength was compared using resin pre-coating and three silane coupling agents' coating techniques. The results showed that the specimens with anodizing + RPC treatment had the highest average shear strength, significantly increasing the bonding strength compared to anodizing base strength and silane-coated specimens. The RPC technique proved to be an effective bonding strength reinforcement method in titanium and carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composites, making it a potential alternative for aerospace applications.

Mode I tensile fracture behavior of adhesively-bonded metal-metal, metal-CFRP, and CFRP-CFRP bi-material combinations analyzed by size effect method

Yao Qiao et al.

Summary: Understanding the adhesive and interfacial fracture is crucial for improving adhesive performance in bi-material joints. This study compared the fracture energies estimated by conventional methods and the size effect method for different material combinations. The results showed that the size effect method was not influenced by specimen geometry, whereas conventional methods were highly dependent on it. The size effect method allowed objective comparison of interfacial fracture between metal/adhesive and CFRP/adhesive combinations.

Comparison of impact resistance of carbon fibre composites with multiple ultra-thin CNT, aramid pulp, PBO and graphene interlayers

Yunsen Hu et al.

Summary: This study compared the impact properties of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates with different fillers. The results showed that ultra-thin multi-wall carbon nanotubes, Aramid pulp micro/nano-fibers, and poly (pphenylene-2,6-benzobisoxazole) fibers significantly reduced impact damage, while multi-layer graphene did not have this effect. Furthermore, these ultra-thin interlayers had no adverse effect on compressive properties and even improved the residual compressive strength without any impact damage.

Enhanced interfacial bonding strength of laser bonded titanium alloy/CFRTP joint via hydrogen bonds interaction

Caiwang Tan et al.

Summary: The bonding between titanium alloy and carbon fiber reinforced thermal plastic has been widely used in lightweight fabrication. However, the metal-plastic bonded joints are usually weak. In this study, laser joining was performed to enhance the bonding strength by using surface modification techniques such as micro-arc oxidation and silane coupling agent treatment. The results showed that the porous structure created by the micro-arc oxidation process increased the roughness of the titanium alloy surface and promoted mechanical interlocking. Additionally, the silane coupling agent introduced hydrogen bonds between functional groups, significantly improving the interfacial bonded force.

Shin Nakamura et al.

Summary: In this study, the adhesive mechanism between epoxy resin and alumina surface was investigated using a combination of MD and DFT methods. The results showed that hydrogen bonds play a significant role in adhesion energy, while the contribution of dispersion interactions is relatively small. The direction of hydrogen bonding and the difference in geometry at the interface are important factors in maintaining adhesive strength during the failure process of the adhesive interface.
