Simultaneous enhancement of strength and ductility in a medium carbon low-alloy steel induced by secondary martensite and Cu-rich particles

X. X. Dong et al.

Summary: This study aims to improve both the strength and ductility of a medium carbon low-alloy steel by adding Cu and conducting the partitioning treatment. The microstructure obtained consisted of temper martensite, retained austenite, M-A islands/secondary martensite, bainitic ferrite, and nanosized Cu-rich particles. The partitioning temperature significantly influenced the microstructure, leading to distinct variations in mechanical properties. The increase in partitioning temperature from 240°C to 380°C resulted in a decrease in yield strength from 1470 MPa to 1110 MPa, while the ultimate tensile strength gradually decreased from 2300 MPa to 1440 MPa. However, the ductility significantly increased from 9% to 26% with the increasing partitioning temperature. The formation of numerous nanosized Cu-rich particles in the temper martensite contributed to the simultaneous increase in yield strength and ductility.

Cavitation bubble structures below a soft boundary in an ultrasonic field

Fan Li et al.

Summary: We investigated the layer structure of bubbles beneath water/air and water/EPE interfaces using high-speed photography. The structure was formed by floating spherical clusters, derived from bubble nuclei attaching at the interface, bubbles floating in the liquid, or bubbles generated on the transducer surface. The shape of the boundary influenced the layer structure, which appeared similar below the water/EPE interface. A simplified model of bubble column and chain was developed to describe interface impacts and bubble interaction in a branching structure. The resonant frequency of bubbles was found to be lower than that of isolated single bubbles, and the primary acoustic field played a significant role in structure generation. Higher acoustic frequency and pressure decreased the distance between the structure and the interface. In low-frequency intense inertial cavitation fields (28 and 40 kHz), a hat-like layer structure of bubbles was more likely to exist, with violent bubble oscillation. On the other hand, structures composed of discrete spherical clusters were more likely to form in relatively weak cavitation fields at 80 kHz, where stable and inertial cavitation coexisted. The theoretical predictions were consistent with experimental observations.

The Tribological and Mechanical Properties of PI/PAI/EP Polymer Coating under Oil Lubrication, Seawater Corrosion and Dry Sliding Wear

Shijie Yu et al.

Summary: The tribological performance of a copper alloy engine bearing under oil lubrication, seawater corrosion, and dry sliding wear was investigated. Three different PI/PAI/EP coatings with varying amounts of Ce2O3 were designed and prepared using a liquid spraying process. The tribological properties of these coatings were tested under different working conditions. The results showed that the hardness of the coating decreased with the addition of Ce2O3 due to the agglomeration of Ce2O3. The wear amount of the coating initially increased and then decreased with the increase of Ce2O3 content under dry sliding wear. Under seawater corrosion, the wear resistance of the coating decreased with the increase of Ce2O3 content. The coating with 1.5 wt% Ce2O3 exhibited the best wear resistance. Under oil lubrication conditions, the coating showed stable frictional coefficient and good lubrication and protection effect of the lubricating oil film.

Tribological performance and behaviour of CVD TiC/TiCN/TiN multilayer coating at elevated temperature

Shao-Long Wang et al.

Summary: The TiC/TiCN/TiN multilayer coating was prepared on a high-speed tool steel W6Mo5Cr4V2 by chemical vapour deposition, and its tribological performance was investigated at 400-600 degrees Celsius. Results show that the friction coefficient of the coating decreases initially before increasing again with temperature, while the average wear rate increases continuously. The presence of Fe(2)O(3) in the tribo-oxidative layer contributes to a reduction in the coating's friction coefficient but an increase in wear rate.
