Time-varying impact of information and communication technology on carbon emissions

Xianming Sun et al.

Summary: Using a panel data of 63 countries from 1995 to 2017, we employ the local linear dummy variable estimation (LLDVE) method to investigate the time-varying net environmental impact of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Our analysis reveals that, regardless of national income level, ICT increases CO2 emissions until 2004 but reduces them after 2008. We further show that the positive environmental impact of ICT on high-income countries is approximately 10 times greater than that on middle-income countries over time. These findings suggest that the development of ICT should be encouraged globally to mitigate carbon emissions, particularly in middle-income countries, considering the benefits of improved technology absorption rate in high-income countries.

How ageing shapes the relationship between working time and carbon dioxide emissions: Evidence from Chinese households

Junjie Zhang et al.

Summary: Working time and ageing have significant impacts on the transition to a low-carbon society, and their interaction plays a crucial role in carbon dioxide emissions. This study finds that reducing working time can effectively reduce household indirect emissions, but ageing reshapes the relationship between working time and emissions by influencing time allocation and consumption patterns. The findings suggest that work time reduction policies should consider the level of elderly occupants and household income.

Quantifying the implications of behavioral changes induced by digitalization on energy transition: A systematic review of methodological approaches

L. Stermieri et al.

Summary: Digitalization is expected to play a crucial role in addressing environmental issues and supporting the energy transition. This paper discusses the importance of understanding the impact of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) applications on user behavior and energy consumption in order to prevent rebound effects. Through a literature review, it identifies a gap in linking the effects of ICT on user behavior and energy consumption over time and in different regions. The paper highlights the challenge of selecting an appropriate approach to analyze both changes in user behavior and the future energy implications of ICT applications.

Summary: Moving beyond technological advancements, working time reduction is proposed as a sustainable policy that can simultaneously reduce environmental pressures and improve social and economic outcomes. This study explores the relationship between average working hours and CO2 emissions in the US states from 2005 to 2015, considering how inequality moderates this relationship. The findings suggest that inequality amplifies the effects of working hours on emissions, highlighting the importance of reducing inequality and working hours to achieve social, ecological, and economic benefits.
