Biological process architecture in continuous-flow activated sludge by gravimetry: Controlling densified biomass form and function in a hybrid granule-floc process at Dijon WRRF, France

Clement Roche et al.

Summary: The full-scale demonstration of activated sludge conversion into a granule-floc hybrid process in the Dijon water resource recovery facility was successful in optimizing settleability and process robustness. The densified biomass maintained stable SVIs below 100 ml/g for several months and achieved a year-round SVI below 50 ml/g, breaking the cycle of interannual bulking. Controlling granule-floc proportions allows for improved operational adjustments and design accuracy, enabling stable settling and effluent functionalities.

Gravimetric selection of activated sludge for settling properties improvement and granular sludge formation - full scale case study

N. Gemza et al.

Summary: With increasing extreme weather events, wastewater treatment plant operators need to increase plant hydraulic capacity while ensuring effluent quality compliance. This study evaluated the use of gravimetric selection technology in hydrocyclones to improve activated sludge settling characteristics and assess its ability to form granular sludge. The results showed that under certain process conditions, the technology effectively reduced SVI values and increased RAS solids concentration. However, further research is needed to consistently maintain low SVI values throughout the year.

Integrated moving bed biofilm reactor with partial denitrification-anammox for promoted nitrogen removal: Layered biofilm structure formation and symbiotic functional microbes

Zhaoxia Xue et al.

Summary: PD/A is an advanced nitrogen removal process that has been successfully implemented in a moving bed biofilm reactor. The study demonstrated that the nitrogen removal efficiency reached 76.60% with a COD/NO3-N ratio of 2.0, and the contribution of anammox was 88.01%. By analyzing the microbial structure, it was found that the abundance of Saccharimonadales, responsible for denitrification, increased while the abundance of Candidatus Jettenia, responsible for anammox, decreased. The synergistic effect of these two functional bacteria enabled stable and efficient nitrogen removal.

Weihua Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the metabolic mechanisms, process applications, community abundance, and influencing factors of phosphorus-accumulating organisms (PAOs) in wastewater treatment. It identifies novel PAOs, such as Dechloromonas and Tetrasphaera, which can remove phosphorus through different metabolic pathways. Dechloromonas can achieve simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal in an anoxic environment, reducing carbon source requirements and energy consumption.
