A systematic literature review and meta-analysis of Toxoplasma gondii seroprevalence in goats

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in goats worldwide and identify the main risk factors associated with the infection from 2000 to 2020. The meta-analysis included data from 55,317 goats in 75 reports published in major global electronic databases. The global seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in goats was found to be 27.49%, with the lowest prevalence in Asia and the highest in Central America and Europe. Various risk factors, such as the presence of cats, goat age, gender, and the rearing system, were associated with the seroprevalence. The study highlights the heterogeneity in seroprevalence across different regions and the influence of risk factors.

Seroprevalence, risk factors, and serological cross-reactivity for diagnosis of Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum infections in goats in India

Summary: This study investigated the epidemiology and diagnosis of Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum infections in goats in India. The seroprevalence of T. gondii was 56.9% while that of N. caninum was 10.9%. The agreement between different diagnostic tests was high. The use of appropriate serum dilutions can prevent cross-reactivity between these parasites.

Toxoplasma gondii infection in goats: serological, pathological, and clinical monitoring during gestation

Summary: This study evaluated Toxoplasma gondii infection in pregnant goats and found that it significantly affected reproductive health, leading to estrus recurrence, embryonic death, and abortion. The presence of anti-T. gondii antibodies in serum samples from goats and their offspring, along with the detection of T. gondii DNA in aborted fetuses and associated histopathological lesions, confirmed vertical transmission. In addition, the study determined that toxoplasmosis caused by genotype ToxoDB #1 resulted in severe reproductive loss in the goat flock.
