Chemically Functionalized Gold Nanosphere-Blended Nematic Liquid Crystals for Photonic Applications

Bhupendra Pratap Singh et al.

Summary: There is a growing demand for functional materials that can adjust light-emissive properties in organic optoelectronic devices. In this study, highly emissive and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) electroluminescent composite systems composed of a blend of nematic liquid crystals (NLC) and polyethylene-functionalized gold nanospheres (GNSs) are presented. The findings show superior electro-optical properties, such as a reduction in threshold voltage by approximately 24%. Additionally, the fall time and rotational viscosity are significantly reduced for different concentrations of GNS-blended liquid crystal cells. The increased UV absorbance and enhanced luminescence properties are attributed to surface plasmon resonance and AIE effect, making them suitable for new-age display applications.

Synthesis and characterization of semiconducting copper oxide nanoparticles and their impact on the physical properties of a nematic liquid crystalline material 4-pentyl-4′-cyanobiphenyl

Mayank Jaiswal et al.

Summary: The green synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) was successfully achieved using a biological, eco-friendly, and cost-effective method without requiring an inert atmosphere. The synthesized CuO NPs were characterized and confirmed to have a size of 2-3 nm through X-ray diffraction, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy techniques. Two different weight percentages (0.2 and 0.5) of the CuO NPs were dispersed in a liquid crystalline material (4-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl, 5CB), and the physical properties of the pure 5CB and its nanocomposites were studied. The results showed enhancements in the nematic-isotropic transition temperature and conductivity, as well as a decrease in the optical band gaps of the dispersed samples.

Electric tuning and switching of the resonant response of nanoparticle arrays with liquid crystals

Erik A. P. van Heijst et al.

Summary: We report on the design, fabrication, and analysis of a tunable device combining nanoparticle arrays that support collective surface lattice resonances (SLRs) with liquid crystals (LCs). The optoelectronic tunability of the nematic LC and the dependency of sharp SLRs on the refractive index of the environment are exploited to achieve spectral tunability. This device offers rapid and reversible tuning of the SLR wavelength through electrical control of the LC state, and also enables control of the presence of a quasi-guided mode.

Polymer dispersed liquid crystals doped with CeO2 nanoparticles for the smart window

Li Jinqian et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of crosslinking agent TMPTA content, liquid crystal content, and CeO2 content on the polymer structures and electro-optical properties of PDLC films. It was found that by doping a small amount of CeO2 nanoparticles, the electro-optical properties of PDLC films can be optimized, showing a significant decrease in V-th and increase in CR. This work provides a valuable approach to optimize the electro-optical properties of PDLC films, laying a solid foundation for their wide application.
