Bile salt dietary supplementation promotes growth and reduces body adiposity in gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata)

Alberto Ruiz et al.

Summary: The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of dietary supplementation using bile salts on growth and feed performance, fat accumulation and tissue condition in gilthead seabream. It was found that the supplementation of 0.06% bile salts in the diet significantly increased the fish's body weight and decreased the level of perivisceral fat. Furthermore, the bile acid profile in the gallbladder and anterior intestine was modified by the dietary supplementation of bile salts.

Fish disease prevention via microbial dysbiosis-associated biomarkers in aquaculture

Julia Mougin et al.

Summary: Infectious diseases in aquaculture are costly to manage and can act as potential vectors for zoonoses. The advancement of Next-Generation Sequencing has revealed the role of the microbiome in disease regulation and resilience. The recognition of a holistic framework in disease aetiology is crucial for the development of new prevention methods, such as identifying biomarkers for dysbiosis prior to physical symptoms.

Modulation of gut microbiota and intestinal immune response in gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) by dietary bile salt supplementation

Alberto Ruiz et al.

Summary: Given the potential role of bile salts in lipid digestion, this study evaluated the effects of bile salts supplementation on gut immune response and microbial populations in gilthead seabream. The results showed differential modulation of the microbiota in the anterior and posterior intestine, as well as changes in gene expression related to intestinal health and immune response. Overall, bile salts supplementation could enhance fish farming without compromising intestinal health.

Gut microbiota promotes cholesterol gallstone formation by modulating bile acid composition and biliary cholesterol secretion

Hai Hu et al.

Summary: Cholesterol gallstone disease is a common global condition, and its pathogenesis is not fully understood. This study demonstrates that gut microbiota, specifically Desulfovibrionales, plays a role in gallstone formation through its influence on bile acid and cholesterol metabolism. Fecal transplantation of gut microbiota from gallstone patients to mice can induce gallstone formation, and mice carrying Desulfovibrionales show enhanced bile acid production and increased cholesterol secretion.

Bile Acids Transporters of Enterohepatic Circulation for Targeted Drug Delivery

Robin Durnik et al.

Summary: This paper provides a systematic review on the transport processes and enterohepatic circulation of bile acids (BAs). It focuses on describing specific or less-specific BA transport proteins and their localization, and provides essential information about the properties, flow, metabolism, and functions of BAs. The transport processes are described step by step, accompanied by descriptions of major proteins involved, and spillage of BAs into systemic circulation and urine excretion are also discussed. The review also highlights the importance of less-studied areas in the development of BA-related drugs.

Summary: Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by the progressive loss of neuron structure and function. Current therapy mainly focuses on symptomatic treatment, but targeting biochemical factors in mitochondria may offer promising treatment options. PPAR gamma-PGC1 alpha plays a crucial role in regulating mitochondrial biogenesis and has been studied in clinical trials for PD, AD, and HD.

Fish cytokines: current research and applications

Masahiro Sakai et al.

Summary: Cytokines are low molecular weight glycoproteins involved in regulating the immune system, with over 100 types identified in humans. Fish also have similar cytokines, and using them as markers can help study the fish's innate immune response. By analyzing cytokine gene expression, researchers can investigate the immune response and inflammatory cytokine involvement in fish.

Summary: The sustainability of aquaculture has been intensely debated since 2000, with major contributions coming from inland aquaculture in Asia. There have been significant advances in feed efficiency and fish nutrition, but reliance on marine ingredients remains a challenge. Molluscs and seaweed have potential for ecosystem services and global nutritional security, but their quantification, valuation, and market development are still underexploited.

Summary: SIRT1 of largemouth bass was cloned and characterized in this study, showing high expression in gonad, heart, and liver with conserved functional sites. Activation of SIRT1 by dietary resveratrol elevated protein expression, activated insulin pathway, enhanced antioxidant capacity, and reduced hepatic triglycerides content. This suggests a role for SIRT1 in improving antioxidant capacity and alleviating hepatic lipid deposition in largemouth bass.
