Altered higher-order coupling between brain structure and function with embedded vector representations of connectomes in schizophrenia

Bin Wang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the existence of functional dependency in both direct and indirect regional relationships in the brain. Using node2vec embedding representation and pearson correlation, the study quantifies the higher-order coupling between structure and function in normal controls and schizophrenia. The results indicate a significant increase in higher-order coupling in schizophrenia, primarily focusing on indirect structural connections.

Abnormal Functional Connectivity Within Default Mode Network and Salience Network Related to Tinnitus Severity

Binbin Xiong et al.

Summary: This study examines the central nervous characteristics of tinnitus patients with different severity using rs-EEG. Results show that compared to healthy controls, all tinnitus patients exhibit significant activation in the auditory cortex (middle temporal lobe, BA 21). The moderate-to-severe tinnitus group shows enhanced connectivity between the parahippocampus and posterior cingulate gyrus, as well as increased functional connectivity between the auditory cortex and insula. The connections between the insula and the parahippocampal and posterior cingulate gyrus are positively correlated with tinnitus severity.

Structural and Functional Network-Level Reorganization in the Coding of Auditory Motion Directions and Sound Source Locations in the Absence of Vision

Ceren Battal et al.

Summary: The study found that early blindness alters the connectivity of occipitotemporal networks in the brain, resulting in enhanced response to moving sounds. This alteration is not only specific to motion features, but also involves sound source location information. In blind individuals, the anterior portion of the occipitotemporal cortex responds more strongly to moving sounds compared to sighted individuals, while the posterior portion selectively responds to moving sounds only in blind participants. Additionally, the functional properties of the human planum temporale, a region involved in auditory motion processing, are also altered in blind individuals.

Resting-state Networks in Tinnitus A Scoping Review

Tori Elyssa Kok et al.

Summary: This scoping review provides an overview of resting-state fMRI studies in chronic subjective tinnitus patients. It identifies alterations in various resting-state networks, such as the auditory network, default mode network, attention networks, and visual network. However, the lack of reproducibility in the field may be attributed to the use of different regions of interest and analytical methods, as well as the heterogeneity of tinnitus. Future studies should focus on replication using the same regions of interest and controlling for potential confounds, in order to potentially identify a biomarker for tinnitus.

Higher-order sensorimotor circuit of the brain's global network supports human consciousness

Summary: The study aimed to identify critical nodes within the brain's global functional network that support consciousness. Using graph-theoretical measure of degree centrality and ROI-based functional connectivity, the researchers found higher-order sensory and motor regions as well as a sensorimotor circuit to be important hubs whose degree centrality was significantly reduced when consciousness was reduced or absent. This suggests potential mechanism-guided treatment targets for disorders of consciousness.
