What can mathematical modelling contribute to a sociology of quantification?

Andrea Saltelli et al.

Summary: The sociology of quantification has focused less on mathematical modeling compared to other forms of quantification such as statistics, metrics, or algorithms based on artificial intelligence. This study explores how concepts and approaches from mathematical modeling can offer nuanced tools for ensuring methodological soundness, normative adequacy, and fairness of numbers in the sociology of quantification. The authors argue that methodological soundness can be achieved through sensitivity analysis techniques, while normative adequacy and fairness can be addressed through various dimensions of sensitivity auditing. In addition, the study investigates how modeling can inform other instances of quantification to promote political agency.

The Intelligent Prospector v1.0: geoscientific model development and prediction by sequential data acquisition planning with application to mineral exploration

John Mern et al.

Summary: Geoscientific models rely on geoscientific data, so improving models often requires acquiring additional data. The value of information and Bayesian optimal survey design can guide the acquisition of additional data, but they usually focus on evaluating one campaign at a time. In real settings, especially in Earth resource exploration, planning a large sequence of data acquisition campaigns is necessary. This study formulates the problem as a partially observable Markov decision process and presents methodologies to solve it using Monte Carlo planning methods, demonstrating its effectiveness in reducing uncertainty.

A critical perspective on uncertainty appraisal and sensitivity analysis in life cycle assessment

Samuele Lo Piano et al.

Summary: This study provides a review of approaches for uncertainty appraisal in the life cycle assessment literature. The findings suggest that uncertainty is only appraised in a few studies, with a focus on the life cycle inventory phase. The phases of goal and scope definition and life cycle impact assessment receive less attention. In addition, the study identifies the need for improvement in the appraisal of epistemic uncertainty and the correct definition of probability distribution of uncertain factors.

Technical Advances in Aviation Electrification: Enhancing Strategic R&D Investment Analysis through Simulation Decomposition

Mariia Kozlova et al.

Summary: Computational decision-making in real world environmental and sustainability contexts often involves comparing uncertain factors and difficult dimensions. Monte Carlo simulation modeling has been commonly used to integrate uncertain inputs and construct probability distributions of outputs. Visual analytics and data visualization can support processing, analyzing, and communicating the influence of multi-variable uncertainties on decision-making. This paper introduces the Simulation Decomposition (SimDec) technique to quantitatively examine carbon emissions resulting from greater airline electrification in the aviation industry. SimDec decomposes a Monte Carlo model of the flying range of all-electric aircraft based on improvements to batteries and motor efficiencies. SimDec's generalizability and simple visualization of complex uncertainties make it a powerful tool in environmental decision-making.

Heterogeneous treatment effects in social policy studies: An assessment of contemporary articles in the health and social sciences

Summary: Social policies have varying effects on different subgroups of people, and evaluating these heterogeneous treatment effects is crucial for reducing health inequities. There is a lack of standardized methods for assessing these effects in social policy and health research. More research is needed to understand the frequency and methods of evaluating heterogeneous treatment effects.

Summary: This paper proposes a method of planning groundwater remediation as a POMDP, which can derive better remediation strategies by optimizing the trade-off between information gathering and future scenario performance. Empirical results show that DESPOT outperforms handcrafted heuristics and optimization methods by incorporating both previous information and future reward.

Summary: This paper presents a novel approach for characterizing uncertainty in the manual grape harvest of a winery in Tuscany. It builds a model to define useful output variables and assesses the range and importance of these variables through uncertainty analysis and sensitivity analysis. The approach can aid in risk characterization and efficient grape harvest management.
