Modelling and nanofabrication of chiral dielectric metasurfaces

Luca Fagiani et al.

Summary: Polarization control through all-dielectric metasurfaces has great potential in various fields. In this study, we analyze the influence of nanofabrication errors on the circular dichroism (CD) and quality factor of the optical mode. By modeling nanofabrication uncertainties, such as the gaps between nanostructures, etching process imperfections, and modification of the asymmetry factor, we find that engineering the gap is the most important parameter for achieving high-quality factor and enhanced optical dichroism. Optimization of nanofabrication processes allows for precise chiral metasurfaces with lower fabrication uncertainties.

Quantum technologies in diamond enabled by laser processing

A. N. Giakoumaki et al.

Summary: Integrated photonic circuits with the ability to confine and manipulate light show promise for applications in quantum information and sensing technologies. The negatively charged nitrogen vacancy (NV-) diamond color center is a leading candidate as a spin-active quantum emitter, with the capability of optically reading its ground spin state and long coherence times at room temperature. The use of femtosecond laser writing allows for the fabrication of optical waveguides and NV complexes. This Perspective reviews the physical mechanisms of laser fabrication in diamond, analyzes the properties of waveguides, single- and ensemble-NV centers, and discusses the potential for their integration into photonic devices for quantum information and sensing.

Micro-Hole Generation by High-Energy Pulsed Bessel Beams in Different Transparent Materials

Valeria V. Belloni et al.

Summary: In this study, micro-drilling transparent dielectric materials using the combination of picosecond pulsed Bessel beams with the trepanning technique has been successfully demonstrated on samples with different thicknesses and thermal/mechanical characteristics. Through analysis of the features of the drilled holes, the advantages and drawbacks of applying this technique to various materials such as glass, polymer, or diamond have been highlighted. The possibility of optimizing the quality of the aperture at the output sample/air interface in the case of glass has also been discussed.
