Physiological and transcriptional responses of carbohydrate and nitrogen metabolism and ion balance in blueberry plants under nitrogen deficiency

Haiyan Yang et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively investigated the adaptability strategy of highbush blueberry seedlings under nitrogen deficiency stress. The results showed that plant growth was slowed, and the chlorophyll content decreased significantly. Nutrient absorption was also significantly affected, with the decrease in some elements' content. Transcriptomic analysis revealed pathways related to N metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, and amino acid metabolism, providing new strategies for blueberry's response to nitrogen deficiency stress.

Integration of physiology, metabolome and transcriptome for understanding of the adaptive strategies to long-term nitrogen deficiency in Citrus sinensis leaves

Ming-Yi Peng et al.

Summary: The contribution of nitrogen-deficiency-responsive metabolites and genes to long-term nitrogen-deficiency tolerance in Citrus, specifically sweet orange seedlings, is still poorly understood. Through studying the metabolites and genes that respond to long-term nitrogen-deficiency, as well as the impacts on physiological parameters in leaves, it was found that extensive gene and metabolite reprogramming occurred. These findings provide new information on the adaptive strategies of leaves to long-term nitrogen-deficiency.

Summary: Extensive metabolic and gene reprogramming occurred in Citrus sinensis seedlings under nitrogen deficiency, enhancing the ability to maintain phosphate and nitrogen homeostasis, improving energy production and utilization, enhancing metabolite transport, and activating protein processing. Additionally, the roots under nitrogen deficiency exhibited higher antioxidant capacity and delayed senescence.

High pH Alleviated Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis) Copper Toxicity by Enhancing the Capacity to Maintain a Balance between Formation and Removal of Reactive Oxygen Species and Methylglyoxal in Leaves and Roots

Jiang Zhang et al.

Summary: The study showed that high pH can alleviate oxidative damage caused by copper toxicity in plants by reducing the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and methylglyoxal (MG), and coordinating detoxification systems. In contrast, low pH disrupts the balance between generation and removal, leading to oxidative damage in plants.

Transcriptome analysis reveals candidate genes involved in nitrogen deficiency stress in apples

Binbin Wen et al.

Summary: This study identified differentially expressed genes in apple leaves under early and late nitrogen deficiency stress. Functional analysis revealed the involvement of these genes in pathways and metabolic networks related to apple adaptation to nitrogen deficiency stress. Furthermore, MdNAC4 was identified as a key transcription factor regulating nitrogen deficiency stress.

Adaptive responses of carbon and nitrogen metabolisms to nitrogen-deficiency in Citrus sinensis seedlings

Wei-Tao Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adaptive responses of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) metabolisms to N-deficiency in Citrus sinensis seedlings. The findings suggest that under N-deficiency conditions, there are adaptive changes in C and N metabolisms, and differences exist between roots and leaves.

Up-regulated 2-alkenal reductase expression improves low-nitrogen tolerance in maize by alleviating oxidative stress

Yi Wang et al.

Summary: Overexpressing endogenous NADPH-dependent 2-alkenal reductase (ZmAER) in maize enhanced tolerance to low nitrogen stress, reduced oxidative stress, and improved nutrient use efficiency. Up-regulated ZmAER expression increased biomass, nitrogen accumulation, NUE, and leaf photosynthesis in transgenic plants compared to wild-type plants under low nitrogen conditions.

Physiological and Comparative Transcriptomic Analysis Provide Insight Into Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) Root Senescence in Response

Lingxiao Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of low nitrogen on root senescence in cotton. Results showed that nitrogen starvation induced premature leaf senescence but delayed root senescence due to increased catalase activity and decreased malonaldehyde content with low nitrogen treatment. Changes in gene expression also indicated upregulation of glutathione and ascorbate peroxidase synthesis genes and downregulation of ABA, apoptosis, caspase, and cell cycle-related genes. Overall, this study provides new insights into the effects of nitrogen starvation on root senescence.

Effects of Combined Potassium and Organic Fertilizer Application on Newhall Navel Orange Nutrient Uptake, Yield, and Quality

Mingxia Wen et al.

Summary: The study showed that the combined application of different doses of potassium and organic fertilizers significantly improved the growth, yield, and fruit quality of Newhall navel oranges. In particular, the OM15+K05 treatment resulted in significantly higher dry weights of leaves and twigs. This combination also led to better nutrient uptake, increased fruit yield, improved fruit surface color, and thinner skin. The optimal fruit quality was observed in plants treated with OM10+K15.
