Auditory spatial cueing reduces neglect after right- hemispheric stroke: A proof of concept study

B. C. Kaufmann et al.

Summary: Spatial neglect after right-hemispheric stroke is a significant predictor of negative outcomes, but listening to music with auditory spatial cueing can significantly reduce the severity of neglect and has the potential to be used as an add-on in neurorehabilitation.

Music in the brain

Peter Vuust et al.

Summary: Music is a universal and pleasurable experience that shapes brain structure and function. Traditionally, music processing has been studied as an auditory phenomenon, but recent research suggests that it also involves active prediction. This comprehensive understanding of music processing has important implications for human creativity and improvisation.

Multisensory stimulation for the rehabilitation of unilateral spatial neglect

Luca Zigiotto et al.

Summary: The effects of intensive audio-visual Multisensory Stimulation (MS) on Unilateral Spatial Neglect (USN) were compared with those of Prismatic Adaptation (PA) in stroke patients, showing comparable overall improvements but with MS being more effective in alleviating personal neglect. The clinical gains of the MS treatment were not influenced by disease duration and lesion volume, and persisted up to one month post-treatment, suggesting MS as a novel and promising rehabilitation procedure for USN.

Deficits of hierarchical predictive coding in left spatial neglect

Fabrizio Doricchi et al.

Summary: Neglect patients with right brain damage show deficits in predictive coding, responding differently to left-side and right-side deviant tones based on the frequency of occurrence in the acoustic environment. They exhibit impaired 'Global' predictions which are independent of 'Local' error signals, relying solely on statistical regularities related to events on the right side of space.

Anterior insula and inferior frontal gyrus: where ventral and dorsal visual attention systems meet

Dario Cazzoli et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that enhancing the activity of the ventral attentional network in right-hemispheric stroke patients can improve the reaction speed of the dorsal attentional network to visual stimuli and alleviate neglect symptoms. This effect is significantly associated with the integrity of the right anterior insula and adjacent inferior frontal gyrus.
