Global modelling of nonlinear spatiotemporal dynamics of a drill-string with multiple regenerative effects

Dou Xie et al.

Summary: An integrated model with spatially distributed inertia is developed to study the axial and torsional dynamics of a drill-string, taking into account nonlinearities arising from re-generative cutting and frictional effects. The model is tested for convergence and prediction ability, showing robustness. Linear eigenvalue analysis reveals drilling stability and the influence of spatial discretization resolution. Numerical bifurcation analysis uncovers various co-existing attractors and nonlinear drilling dynamics near stability boundaries, including stable limit-cycle motion, periodic stick-slip vibration, and bit-bounce.

Suppressing Coupled AxialTorsional Vibration of Drill-String System Considering Regenerative Cutting Induced Delay and Actuator Saturation

Chengda Lu et al.

Summary: This article focuses on suppressing the axial-torsional vibration of drill-string system, by considering the state-dependent delay caused by regenerative cutting and actuator saturation. The measurement and control inputs are applied on the surface side of the drill-string, while a time-delay nonlinearity is introduced due to the bit-rock interaction at the downhole side. The article establishes a multi-degree-of-freedom lumped parameter model for capturing the dynamics of the drill-string, and describes the dimensionless dynamics of the coupled axial-torsional vibration using a state-space equation of a time-delay system with saturation nonlinearity. Delay-dependent sufficient conditions are provided to design a dynamic output-feedback controller for vibration suppression using surface measurement and control only. The effectiveness of the approach is demonstrated through a case study and an experiment.

Experimental and numerical study on the dynamic characteristics of full-size PDC bit

Mingjie Cai et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of full-size polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) bit and establishes a nonlinear dynamic model for drillstring-bit-rock system in drilling engineering scale. Experimental results show that the PDC bit drills the fastest in artificial rock, followed by sandstone, and drills the slowest in limestone. Factors influencing the bit footage include initial weight on bit (WOB), rotational speed, and rock strength. The research results provide valuable guidance for improving drilling rate of penetration (ROP) and reducing downhole accidents.

Axial-Torsional Dynamics of a Drilling Bit with Non-uniform Blade Arrangement

Mohammad Amin Faghihi et al.

Summary: This study proposes a model for the coupled axial-torsional dynamics of a drilling bit with a non-uniform blade arrangement and investigates the effects of multiple-regenerative effects and blade arrangement on drilling vibration. The drill pipes are modeled using the neutral-type time-delay model, and the bit-rock interaction is described by a rate-independent law. A new method for determining the depth of cut is developed to capture different phenomena, including multiple-regenerative effects. Simulation results demonstrate the validity of the proposed model and show that non-uniform blade arrangement can reduce vibration in certain operating conditions. Disregarding multiple-regenerative effects in the model can lead to significant modeling errors.

Stick-Slip Vibration Suppression in Drill String Using Observer-Based LQG Controller

Rami Riane et al.

Summary: This paper aims to eliminate severe stick-slip vibrations along the drill string of a rotary drilling system using the LQG observer-based controller approach. An observer was designed to estimate unknown inputs, and a controller with 10 degrees of freedom was implemented in the drill string model. Simulation and experimental results showed that the proposed controller had better performance and robustness compared to other controllers. It is recommended to use this approach in smart rotary drilling systems.

Friction-induced planar vibration of two rigid plates

Ningyu Liu et al.

Summary: This paper studies the dynamical model for friction-induced vibration of two rigid circular plates in point contact. The coupling of translational and rotational motion increases the complexity of the dynamics of the friction-excited system. The study shows that the coupling greatly expands the range of operating parameters for dynamic instability and leads to rich bifurcation behaviors.

Modelling and controlling of drill string stick slip vibrations in an oil well drilling rig

Amir Noabahar Sadeghi et al.

Summary: This study focuses on modeling and controlling stick slip vibrations in vertical wells. By subdividing the drill string and employing a mathematical model, the performance of three strategies – manipulation of rotational speed, manipulation of weight on bit, and increasing damping at the bottom of the drill string – are analyzed and compared. The study concludes that adjusting weight on bit and increasing damping are more effective than manipulating rotational speed in mitigating stick slip vibrations.

Nonlinear integrated dynamic analysis of drill strings under stick-slip vibration

Mohammad Javad Moharrami et al.

Summary: This study focused on stick-slip torsional vibration in deep-water oil and gas drilling systems, proposing an efficient FE modeling approach for the entire drill string. Research showed that self-excited torsional vibrations may occur at fundamental frequencies lower than the first natural torsional frequency of the drill string. The developed models were verified and resulted in a robust and practical integrated FE model for simulating the entire drill string system dynamics.
