Bouc-Wen class models considering hysteresis mechanism of RC columns in nonlinear dynamic analysis

Sebin Oh et al.

Summary: Bouc-Wen class models are commonly used in nonlinear dynamic and stochastic analysis to describe the hysteretic behaviors of structures. However, these models fail to fully capture the characteristics of deteriorating reinforced concrete (RC) columns, leading to inaccurate response predictions under general loading conditions. In this study, a new Bouc-Wen model is proposed to address this issue by incorporating two additional parameters that represent the hysteresis mechanisms of acute deterioration and pinching relaxation. The effectiveness of the proposed model is demonstrated by comparing it with nonlinear finite element analyses of RC columns in a database.

Shaking table test of an RC frame considering horizontal and vertical ground motions

Zhanxuan Zuo et al.

Summary: This research investigates the seismic performance of an RC frame under both horizontal ground motions and vertical ground motions (VGMs) through a shaking table test. The test results show that the beams of the frame are heavily damaged due to the vertical load caused by VGMs, with the beams on the second floor experiencing more severe damage. The vertical acceleration amplification factor decreases as the seismic intensity increases, and the horizontal frequencies after the test are reduced.

Simplified mechanical models for the seismic collapse performance prediction of unreinforced masonry structures

Li-Ling Yu et al.

Summary: Unreinforced masonry, including non-confined unreinforced masonry (NCURM) and confined unreinforced masonry (CURM), is prone to collapse during earthquakes. This study develops accurate hysteretic models for NCURM and CURM walls using an experimental database and the Ibarra-Krawinkler model. A calibration procedure is established to determine the model parameters, and empirical equations are created based on regression analyses. A multi-degree-of-freedom shear model, constructed based on the wall hysteretic model, is also proposed and verified to have good accuracy.

Artificial rabbits optimization: A new bio-inspired meta-heuristic algorithm for solving engineering optimization problems

Liying Wang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new bio-inspired meta-heuristic algorithm called artificial rabbits optimization (ARO), which is inspired by the survival strategies of rabbits in nature. ARO algorithm is developed by mathematically modeling these survival strategies to create a new optimizer. The effectiveness of ARO is tested and compared with other optimizers, showing superior performance in solving benchmark functions and engineering problems. Moreover, ARO is applied to the fault diagnosis of a rolling bearing, demonstrating its practicality in solving real-world problems.
