The combined effect of load and corrosion on the flexural performance of recycled aggregate concrete beams

Jian Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the combined effect of load and steel corrosion on the flexural performance of recycled aggregate concrete beams. The results show that the load level and aggregate replacement ratio have an impact on the number and spacing of bending cracks in the beams, and the maximum mass loss of tensile reinforcement has a linear relationship with the ultimate moment capacity of the beams.

Spatial Distribution of Corrosion Products Influenced by the Initial Defects and Corrosion-Induced Cracking of the Concrete

Wenjun Zhu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the spatial distribution of corrosion products in concrete through a series of experimental investigations on a marine construction. Using computed tomography test, the distributions of defects and corrosion products in the concrete cover were identified, and the fractal dimension of cracks was analyzed. Some cracks and defects were filled by corrosion products to different degrees. The results indicate that the defects are significantly influenced by the shape and relative location of the deformed steel reinforcement, leading to variations in the corrosion layer. The migration of corrosion products is particularly affected by the location and geometry of the defects, providing a suitable pathway for their migration. This research can contribute to the prediction of concrete cracking caused by chloride-induced corrosion of steel reinforcement.

Impact of Defects in Steel-Concrete Interface on the Corrosion-Induced Cracking Propagation of the Reinforced Concrete

Wenjun Zhu et al.

Summary: This paper presents the corrosion-induced cracking performance of reinforced concrete in a chloride condition. The meso-scale structures of concrete specimens were studied using X-ray micro-computed tomography, revealing the corrosion propagation, accumulation and transportation of corrosion products, and the defects and cracking behaviors of concrete cover. The experimental results show that defects can provide space for corrosion products, significantly increasing the corrosion process and delaying cracking. The propagation of cracking path from the corrosion area to the concrete cover was also captured, contributing to the understanding of corrosion-induced cracking behavior.

Experimental Study on the Flexural Performance of Composite Beams with Corrugated Steel Webs under the Coupled Effect of Chloride Ion Erosion and Sustained Load

Qiang Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the flexural behavior of composite beams with corrugated steel webs (CBCSWs) under the influence of chloride ion erosion and sustained load. The results show that the deflection of the corroded CBCSWs increases more rapidly during the accelerated corrosion test, while the stress of the externally prestressed tendons remains relatively unchanged. During the loading failure process, the relative slip between the web and the concrete plates of the corroded CBCSWs is not fully developed. The ultimate load and deflection of the corroded CBCSWs decrease by 41.1% and 17.9%, respectively, compared to the uncorroded CBCSWs.

Prediction of Corrosion-Induced Longitudinal Cracking Time of Concrete Cover Surface of Reinforced Concrete Structures under Load

Jian Wang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the corrosion characteristics of reinforced concrete (RC) structures under different types of loads. A prediction model is proposed to estimate the time of corrosion-induced longitudinal cracking (CLC) of the concrete cover surface (CCS) under load. The results show that the load significantly affects the critical corrosion depth of steel bars when the interface between steel bars and concrete (IBSC) cracks due to corrosion. The rust-filling layer has a larger influence on the critical corrosion depth of steel bars under load. The proposed model provides valuable insights for durability evaluation and service life prediction of RC structures.
