Abundance and Fractional Solubility of Aerosol Iron During Winter at a Coastal City in Northern China: Similarities and Contrasts Between Fine and Coarse Particles

Huanhuan Zhang et al.

Summary: Aerosol deposition is an important source of soluble iron in open oceans, affecting marine biogeochemistry and primary production. This study measured the abundance and fractional solubility of iron in fine and coarse particles in Qingdao, a coastal city in northern China. The results showed that iron solubility was higher in fine particles compared to coarse particles, with higher solubility observed at high aerosol acidity and high relative humidity.

A Review of Road Traffic-Derived Non-Exhaust Particles: Emissions, Physicochemical Characteristics, Health Risks, and Mitigation Measures

Julia C. Fussell et al.

Summary: Implementing regulatory standards has significantly reduced exhaust emissions of particulate matter from road traffic in developed countries. However, unregulated nonexhaust particle emissions from brake and tire wear, road surface, and road dust resuspension exceed exhaust emissions in many jurisdictions. Although the sources of nonexhaust particles are fairly well-known, specific measurements of airborne concentrations are limited, and the toxicology and epidemiology studies do not provide a clear understanding of the associated health risks.

Chemical characteristics and sources of ambient PM2.5 in a harbor area: Quantification of health risks to workers from source-specific selected toxic elements

Baoshuang Liu et al.

Summary: Samples of ambient PM2.5 were collected in the Qingdao harbor area from March 21 to May 25, 2016, and analyzed to investigate compositions, sources, and health risks of toxic elements. The study found that all selected toxic elements had risks below the USEPA limits, with industrial emissions and crustal dust and coal combustion identified as the main sources of pollution.

Optimization of WD-XRF analytical technique to measure elemental abundance in PM2.5 dust collected on quartz-fibre filter

Shubham Gupta et al.

Summary: Kanpur is identified as one of the most polluted industrial cities in the world, with significantly higher PM2.5 concentration compared to other major cities in India. The study analyzed air quality and elemental concentration over the winter season using FAAS and WD-XRF techniques, revealing an inhomogeneous distribution of elements, particularly K and Na. A strong correlation was found between WD-XRF and FAAS concentration for Al, K, and Na.

No more waste at the elemental analysis of airborne particulate matter on quartz fibre filters

Monika Ogrizek et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that direct sample introduction to ICPMS by laser ablation (LA-ICPMS) provides significant advantages in terms of simplifying sample preparation procedures and avoiding the generation of chemical waste. The research shows that LA-ICPMS can successfully be applied for the determination of the elemental composition of quartz fibre filter samples.

Organic Components of Personal PM2.5 Exposure Associated with Inflammation: Evidence from an Untargeted Exposomic Approach

Xing Jiang et al.

Summary: This study used an exposomic approach to investigate organic components in personal PM2.5 exposure, finding that indoor-derived species with medium volatility were mainly associated with systemic inflammation, while low-volatile ambient components from combustion sources were mostly associated with airway inflammation. Source-specific inflammatory effects were proposed based on the chemical identification of organic compounds associated with inflammatory responses.
