Mechanistic stages of the SCR reaction-Insights into the trade-off between NO reduction and NH3 oxidation over CuSSZ-13 catalysts via isotopic 15NH3 and 18O2 TPSR and steady state studies supported by IR 2D COS and DFT modeling

Monika Fedyna et al.

Summary: Isotopic labeling experiments were conducted to investigate the SCR reaction over CuSSZ-13 zeolites. The reactions were characterized using various techniques, and the results were interpreted using DFT and thermodynamic modeling. The study revealed the temperature regions and identified the main processes and intermediates involved in different stages of SCR reactions. A 2D diagram was constructed to conceptualize the SCR reaction and rationalize the reaction mechanism.

Interconversion between Lewis and Bronsted-Lowry acid sites on vanadia-based catalysts

Rob Jeremiah G. Nuguid et al.

Summary: Temperature, gas feed, and catalyst composition affect the interplay between Lewis acid sites (LAS) and Bronsted-Lowry acid sites (BAS) on vanadia-based materials. Transient experimentation can isolate different LAS, and water can increase BAS. These findings are important for understanding the relationship between LAS and BAS and their role in catalyst reactivity.

In situ spectroscopic studies of the effect of water on the redox cycle of Cu ions in Cu-SSZ-13 during selective catalytic reduction of NOx

Hwangho Lee et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of water on the behavior of active Cu2+ ions in the NH3-SCR reaction. The addition of water significantly enhances the reduction of NOx over the catalyst, and the presence of water promotes the redox cycle of Cu ions.

Support effects in iridium-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol studied by modulation-excitation attenuated total reflection IR spectroscopy

Shizuka Ito et al.

Summary: In the oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde on Ir-based catalysts, the influence of support materials Al2O3, CeO2, and TiO2 was studied. Among them, TiO2 exhibited high catalytic performance, while CeO2 showed poor performance. The formation of a titania overlayer after hydrogen pretreatment significantly affected the catalytic activity.

Mechanism of NH3-Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) of NO/NO2 (Fast SCR) over Cu-CHA Zeolites Studied by In Situ/Operando Infrared Spectroscopy and Density Functional Theory

Chong Liu et al.

Summary: Combining experimental and computational methods, it was found that the Brønsted acid sites on Cu-CHA zeolites play a more important role than Cu sites in promoting the fast selective catalytic reduction of NO/NO2 mixture by NH3. The dual-site catalytic mechanism involving Cu-II sites and Brønsted acid sites was verified by in situ/operando infrared spectroscopy, kinetics, and density functional theory calculations.

Effect of zeolite topology on NH3-SCR activity and stability of Cu-exchanged zeolites

Karolina A. Tarach et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the catalytic activity and stability of Cu-exchanged zeolites in NH3-SCR reaction, showing that the reaction mechanism involves [Cu(OH)(NH3)2(NO)](+) intermediates and reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I). The differentiated speciation of copper sites plays a crucial role in determining the catalytic activity and stability of the zeolitic catalysts.

Transient Kinetic Analysis of Low-Temperature NH3-SCR over Cu-CHA Catalysts Reveals a Quadratic Dependence of Cu Reduction Rates on CuII

Federica Gramigni et al.

Summary: NO and NH3 can readily reduce CuII at low temperatures according to a 1:1:1:1 stoichiometry over Cu-CHA catalysts. The reduction rates of Cu-II show a quadratic dependence on Cu-II, suggesting a dinuclear-Cu-II mediated RHC pathway. Water significantly inhibits the Cu-II reduction rate in the reaction cascade.

In Situ/Operando IR and Theoretical Studies on the Mechanism of NH3-SCR of NO/NO2 over H-CHA Zeolites

Chong Liu et al.

Summary: The mechanism of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of a NO/NO2 mixture by NH3 over H-CHA zeolites was revealed through in situ/operando IR spectroscopy and DFT calculations. It was found that fast SCR is 2 orders of magnitude faster than standard SCR by H-CHA, with the disproportionation of NO2 playing a key role in initiating the reaction.

Magdalena Jablonska et al.

Summary: Comparative studies on micro-/mesoporous Cu-containing zeolites ZSM-5 treated by NaOH, TPAOH, or NaOH/TPAOH revealed that Cu-ZSM-5 catalyst showed the highest activity. Co-cations promoted the formation of [Cu-O-Cu](2+) dimers binding strongly with NOx, with a desorption energy barrier of at least 80 kJ mol(-1).

Alternate pathway for standard SCR on Cu-zeolites with gas-phase ammonia

Rohil Daya et al.

Summary: Redox mechanisms for the SCR of NOx over Cu-zeolites have been theorized, but experimental data does not support NH3 solvation of active copper sites as the initial step for NO consumption. Models predict an initial delay in NO consumption and suggest an alternate SCR pathway utilizing gas-phase NH3, which has been confirmed experimentally. The results suggest a feasible mechanistic pathway involving the reduction of copper sites by NO to generate mobile HONO intermediates.
