Porous silica synthesis out of coal fly ash with no residue generation and complete silicon separation

Tongyao Ju et al.

Summary: This work proposed a no-residue method to synthesize ordered mesoporous silica from CFA, achieving nearly 100% efficiency of Si extraction. The as-synthesized mesoporous silica had a highly-ordered pore structure with a large surface area, pore volume, and average pore diameter. This method provides a new idea to dispose of CFA and synthesize porous silica materials.

Hierarchical porous nanosilica derived from coal gasification fly ash with excellent CO2 adsorption performance

Yanfang Liu et al.

Summary: The preparation of hierarchical porous nanosilica using coal gasification fly ash as a silicon source was achieved by microwave-assisted alkaline extraction followed by hydrothermal synthesis. This method showed fast and efficient silicon extraction with less impurity metal ions. The use of specific compounds as swelling agents induced intergranular pores, which significantly improved the CO2 adsorption capacity of the nanosilica. The isosteric heat of adsorption indicated the presence of both physisorption and chemisorption in the adsorption process.

Magnetic amino-sulfonic dual sorbent for uranyl sorption from aqueous solutions-Influence of light irradiation on sorption properties

Mohammed F. Hamza et al.

Summary: The combination of magnetite microparticles with a bi-functional amino-sulfonate polymer allows the synthesis of a magnetic composite sorbent (M-GANS) that efficiently sorbs uranyl ions. UV irradiation improves both the sorption capacity and kinetics, potentially due to the photo-reduction of uranyl species mediated by magnetite particles and amine groups. The M-GANS also exhibits enhanced selectivity for uranium over other metal ions and can be recycled for multiple cycles with minimal loss in sorption performance.

Optimized fluegas denitrification control strategy to enhance SCR performance during load-cycling transient processes in coal-fired power plants

Junjie Yin et al.

Summary: An integrated NOx emission model of coal-fired units is developed and verified in this study, which includes thermal system simulation, NOx production, and SCR system models. Load-cycling processes under traditional denitrification control strategy are simulated, revealing excessive NH3 injection and increased NOx and NH3 emissions. The analysis of transient processes shows that NH3 storage inertia and temperature and fluegas flow rate play important roles in denitrification performance, leading to significant differences in various load-cycling processes. An optimized NH3 control strategy is proposed, which comprehensively enhances denitrification performance and reduces NH3 injection, NOx emission, and NH3 emission.

Influence and mechanism of the adsorption and reactions of residual NH3, NO, and O2 on coal ash after the selective noncatalytic reduction process

Jingfan Zheng et al.

Summary: NH3 is widely used as a reducing agent in selective noncatalytic reduction (SNCR) for the deNOx of coal-fired boiler flue gas. This study investigated the adsorption and reaction of NH3, NO, and O2 on fly ash at different temperatures. The results provide a theoretical basis for adjusting the migration and conversion of residual NH3 and reducing ammonia slip from power plants.

Synthesis, characterization of chitosan-trithiocyanuric and its removal mechanism of Cr(VI) and Pb(II) from wastewater

Wen Wang et al.

Summary: A new chitosan-trithiocyanuric composite (CS@TMT) was successfully synthesized and characterized in this study. The optimal synthesis conditions were determined using response surface analysis. CS@TMT exhibited higher adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) and Pb(II) compared to CS, and the adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model. The reduction mechanism involved the -SH and -OH groups on CS@TMT, which reduced Cr(VI) to Cr(III) by 69.32%.

Modification of coal fly ash and its use as low-cost adsorbent for the removal of directive, acid and reactive dyes

Zawar Hussain et al.

Summary: In this study, modified coal fly ash showed good removal efficiency for various carcinogenic dyes, with a maximum removal efficiency of 96.03%. Langmuir and Freundlich models were suitable for adsorption isotherm analysis at different dye concentrations, indicating that the adsorption behaviors of all four dyes were better described by pseudo-second-order kinetics. Removal of COD in wastewater by magnetic coagulant prepared from modified fly ash

Wen Wang et al.

Summary: This study reports the preparation of magnetic coagulants (Fe-AFA, Fe-BFA) using acid-modified and base-modified fly ash as adsorbents for chemical oxygen demand (COD) in desulfurization wastewater. The adsorption kinetics and mechanism were investigated using various characterization techniques. Fe-AFA exhibited the best COD adsorption performance and superparamagnetism. The quasi-second-order kinetic and Langmuir equation were found to describe the COD coagulation process. The reusability of magnetic coagulants was also studied.

Removal of Pb2+ from Wastewater By γ-Fe2O3@SHFA Based on Alkali-Modified Fly Ash: Performance and Mechanism

Wen Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a magnetic coagulant was prepared by doping fly ash and magnetic seed for the removal of Pb2+ from wastewater. The coagulation mechanism and properties of the coagulant were investigated. The results showed that the coagulant had a high removal capacity for Pb2+ through charge neutralization and bridging action. Kinetic, isothermal, and thermodynamic analyses indicated that the coagulation process was spontaneous, endothermic, and irreversible. The coagulant remained effective even after multiple reuses.

A concise and systematic study of the hydrothermal synthesis of Si-MCM-48: Structural aspects and mechanical stability

Eduardo Girotte Martins et al.

Summary: The collapse of mesoporous molecular sieve Si-MCM-48 by mechanical compression was studied by modifying synthesis conditions, with samples synthesized at high temperatures and long reaction times showing better mechanical resistance. High temperatures and long reaction times favor the kinetics of silica condensation on the walls, making the samples more suitable for applications in catalysis or adsorption.
