Precise alternating cellular pattern in the inner ear by coordinated hopping intercalations and delaminations

Summary: The mammalian hearing organ, the organ of Corti, contains a precisely positioned array of alternating sensory hair cells and nonsensory supporting cells. The formation of a single row of inner hair cells (IHCs) during embryonic development involves a morphological transition called hopping intercalation that allows cells to move into their final position, delamination of out-of-row cells with low levels of the HC marker Atoh1, and differential adhesion between cell types. This study provides insights into mechanisms of precise patterning in developmental processes.
