Bioinspired aldehyde-free and durable coatings for antibacterial, UV-resistant and flame-retardant cotton fabrics by the covalent bonding and in-situ coprecipitation

Jing Cui et al.

Summary: In this study, aldehyde-free and durable cotton fabrics with well anti-bacteria, UV-resistance and flame retardancy were successfully obtained through an interfacial reaction strategy. The functional coatings showed excellent antibacterial performance, less than 5% UV transmittance, and acted as a physical barrier to reduce heat and decrease smoke release. Even after 50 washing cycles, the coatings still maintained their functional properties. The covalent bonding between chitosan (CS) and part of Zn2+ in ZIF-8 promoted the durability of antibacterial, UV-resistant and flame retardant properties.

Magnetic field responsive microspheres with tunable structural colors by controlled assembly of nanoparticles

Shenglong Shang et al.

Summary: This study proposes an efficient method to prepare magneto-chromatic microspheres with tunable structural color, and the relationship between the size of the microspheres and the PVA flow rate ratio is experimentally determined. The research also confirms that the microspheres can form free-standing films and display tunable structural colors after the evaporation of water in PVA solution. Furthermore, microspheres with fixed structural colors can be obtained by polymerizing microspheres under an external magnetic field.

In-situ coprecipitation formed Fe/Zn-layered double hydroxide/ammonium polyphosphate hybrid material for flame retardant epoxy resin via synergistic catalytic charring

Zhu-Bao Shao et al.

Summary: Inspired by in-situ coprecipitation technology, Fe/Zn-layered double hydroxides (Fe/Zn-LDH) doped ammonium polyphosphate (APP) were prepared for high fire-safety epoxy resins (EP). Fe/Zn-LDH@APP showed uniform deposition on the surface of APP. Results showed that EP containing 4 wt% Fe/Zn-LDH@APP exhibited the highest LOI and passed the UL-94 V0 level. Furthermore, compared to neat EP, the addition of Fe/Zn-LDH@APP decreased the peak of heat release rate, peak of smoke production rate, and the fire growth rate.
