Cellulosic Fiber Waste Feedstock for Bioethanol Production via Bioreactor-Dependent Fermentation

Ahmed E. Mansy et al.

Summary: The study focused on converting industrial waste, specifically cellulosic fiber waste, into bioethanol as an alternative energy source. Various treatments, including physical, chemical, and enzymatic hydrolysis, were used to maximize glucose concentration for fermentation into bioethanol. The results showed that the combination of treatments led to a glucose production of 13.9 mg/mL, while instrumental characterization confirmed the effectiveness of the waste fiber treatment. A yeast strain, Starmerella bacillaris STDF-G4, was identified and used to ferment glucose into bioethanol under optimized conditions, resulting in a production of 3.16 mg/mL. Scaling up the optimized conditions in a fermentation bioreactor further increased bioethanol production to 8.6 mg/mL.
