Lipid peroxide-derived short-chain aldehydes promote programmed cell death in wheat roots under aluminum stress

Xin Liang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the roles of reactive aldehydes in mediating aluminum-induced cellular damage in plant roots. The results suggest that reactive aldehydes may mediate aluminum-induced programmed cell death (PCD) by activating caspase-3-like protease in wheat roots, further exacerbating cell death.

Emission of cyanobacterial volatile organic compounds and their roles in blooms

Zhaojiang Zuo

Summary: Cyanobacteria, as dominant species in eutrophicated waters, release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in response to high irradiance, temperature, and nutrient conditions. These VOCs not only increase offensive odor and transfer allelopathic signals, but also directly kill algae. The VOCs have repelling effects on herbivores and might initiate aggregation among homogeneous species. Adverse conditions can promote VOC emission, playing important roles in cyanobacteria dominating eutrophicated waters and bursting blooms.

Summary: Algicidal bacteria can effectively suppress Microcystis aeruginosa, but their practical application is limited by external factors and low reuse capability. In this study, a bio-degradation capsule was prepared using bio-compatible sodium alginate and eco-friendly ethyl cellulose to improve the performance and reuse capability of algicidal bacteria. The capsule showed better algicidal rate and reusable performance compared to free-living bacteria, indicating its potential for inhibiting algae bloom.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of various USEPA-registered algaecides on microcystin-producing cyanobacteria from Lake Okeechobee through laboratory toxicity experiments. Results showed that certain formulations, particularly copper-based ones, had significant effects on the target cyanobacteria with reduced microcystin release and concentrations compared to untreated controls at different exposure times. These findings provide important data for decision-making and developing management strategies for water bodies impacted by harmful algal blooms.

Low pH-induced cell wall disturbances in Arabidopsis thaliana roots lead to a pattern-specific programmed cell death in the different root zones and arrested elongation in late elongation zone

Jonathas Pereira Gracas et al.

Summary: The low pH stress triggers sensitivity responses in roots, leading to cell death or arrest in elongation. The involvement of the cell wall and the spatiotemporal dynamics of these responses in distinct root zones remain poorly understood. The results suggest that low pH-induced disturbances in cell wall integrity trigger sensitive responses within defined root zones.

Oral exposure to environmental cyanobacteria toxins: Implications for cancer risk

Brenda Y. Hernandez et al.

Summary: The study found that Cyanobacteria were predominant in Areca catechu and Piper betle plants, with low levels detected in oral samples but significantly higher in current AN/BQ chewers. Potential hepatotoxins like microcystin/nodularin, cylindrospermopsin, and anabaenopeptin were detected in saliva and plant samples, suggesting Cyanobacteria contamination in AN/BQ plants and exposure to chewers. This has broad implications for cancer risk globally as Cyanobacteria overgrowth increases.
